San Joaquin traces its history in the latter part of the 13th century according to the Maragtas Legend. Ten (10) Malayan Chieftains or "Datus" together with their families, warriors, and slaves on board ten (10) "binidays" (a type of ancient pre-Spanish era boat) landed at Andonna, near the mouth of Siwaragan (Suagan or Sugan) River. The chieftains, headed by Datu Puti fled from the tyranny of Sul

tan Makatunao in Borneo in search of and to establish a new land for the free. At the time, Panay Island was inhabited by the "Atis" or Negritoes under the rule of Datu Marikudo and Maniwangtiwang. Datu Puti and his men, instead of subduing Marikudo and the lowly "atis" made negotiations of all lowlands of Panay at the price of one golden hat called "saduk", a long gold necklace called "manangyad" and various gifts. Said negotiations took place at the Imbidayan Rock in Barangay Sinogbuhan, now a historic site. After the transaction was sealed, the "atis" retired to the mountains and the Malays took control of the lowlands. What freedom our ancestors gained from the dubbed "purchase of Panay" was lost when Magellan discovered the Philippines in 1521. Spanish colonization of the islands happened gradually under their dominion and settlements were developed into "pueblos" that also contributed to a large degree of the town's cultural heritage. The Roman Catholic Church of San Joaquin, a tangible reminder of the Spanish era was finished in 1869 and was considered a national shrine in September of 1977. Presently, the Municipality of San Joaquin is one of the nineteen (19) coastal towns of the Province of Iloilo located in the southern tip of Panay Island. Overshadowed by a chain of mountain ranges in the northwestern portion, it is one of the forty-three (43) municipalities of the province. Its borders are defined by the Province of Antique on the North, Panay Gulf on the south, the Municipality of Miagao, Iloilo on the east, and the municipalities of Tobias Fornier, Hamtic, and Anini-y of Antique on the west.
