Understanding Algebra is more than just solving for x (unkown), it builds the kind of thinking that future teachers and scientists rely on every day. Recognizing this, DOST scholars from the Pangasinan State University – Bayambang Campus launched Project SciCALaman: A Basic Algebra Tutoring Program, an initiative designed to make math clearer, easier, and more approachable.

Held from March 9 to May 8, 2026, the program brought together 12 (Twelve) Bachelor of Secondary Education students majoring in Science and Mathematics, alongside 9 (Nine) DOST Scholar-Association (SA) tutors and 9 (Nine) members who volunteered their time and skills. The goal was straightforward: strengthen foundational Algebra knowledge while building confidence among fellow educ students who will soon teach these concepts themselves.

At the heart of the program was a structured tutoring approach. Each week, scholar-volunteers facilitated sessions that focused on essential Algebra topics. Rather than overwhelming students with complex theories, tutors broke lessons down into manageable parts, guiding participants through step-by-step solutions, encouraging questions, and promoting active problem-solving.

Leading the sessions were DOST scholars: Dwyle Starjay P. Velasquez, Lowela Mae S. Palisoc, Christian M. Cleofe, Jerwin L. Lasic, Jemric F. Patungan, Bejay M. Macatantan, Kristal Joy A. Ascrate, Dane J. Cayabyab, and Remalyn L. Lacerna. As mostly first-year students, the tutors offered a relatable and peer-centered approach, making it easier for participants to connect, ask questions, and learn collaboratively.

One of the program’s standout features was its effort to go beyond the classroom. Aside from the face-to-face sessions, tutorial videos were produced and uploaded to the organization’s page. These videos allowed learners to revisit lessons anytime, reinforcing concepts and ensuring that learning continued even outside scheduled sessions. It also opened access to a wider audience who could benefit from the materials.

More than just an academic support activity, Project SciCALaman reflected the deeper values of a DOST scholar. Through volunteerism, the tutors demonstrated professional excellence in their mastery of the subject, social responsibility in helping fellow students succeed, and servant leadership by sharing knowledge without expecting anything in return.

In the end, the program proved that sometimes, the most impactful solutions are also the simplest. By making Algebra more understandable, DOST scholars didn’t just help students pass a subject. They also helped the participants build confidence, strengthen future educators, and inspire a culture of shared learning.

Empowering Future S&T Leaders: DOST Ilocos Region conducts 2026 Values Formation Orientation

The Department of Science and Technology Ilocos Region (DOST Ilocos Region) and DOST Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), through the Filipino Patriot Scholars Program in partnership with the DOST Mobilized Amianan Youth Scholars Association (DOST-MAYSA), conducted the 2026 Scholars Values Formation Orientation (SVFO) for DOST-SEI scholars in the Ilocos Region on March 13, 2026. The activity aimed to strengthen scholars’ core values and deepen their understanding of the scholarship as both a privilege and a responsibility. It highlighted the importance of professional excellence, social responsibility, and servant leadership, while also promoting awareness of gender sensitivity and inclusivity.

The program opened with preliminaries, followed by welcome remarks from Teresita A. Tabaog, Regional Director of DOST Ilocos Region. She underscored the vital role of DOST scholars as future leaders and key contributors to national development through science, technology, and innovation.

A session on “DOST-SEI Scholarships as a Package of Opportunities” was delivered by Engr. Janine C. Abuan of the DOST Ilocos Region Scholarship Unit, discussing the benefits, responsibilities, and opportunities available under the scholarship programs. This was complemented by a reflection from scholar Jamilla Casie Orbeta, a first-year BSED Mathematics student from Mariano Marcos State University, who emphasized the importance of maximizing the opportunities provided by the scholarship.
The orientation also featured the session “Values: What Defines Us and Why?”, which highlighted the guiding principles of a Patriot Scholar. Discussions were led by DOST professionals and former scholars: Engr. Bernadine P. Suniega, DOST La Union Supervising Science Research Specialist, on Professional Excellence, Ms. Bernalyn P. Martinez, DOST Pangasinan, Science Research Specialist II, on Social Responsibility, and Engr. Danzelle Bliezelle Hernaez, DOST Ilocos Region Science Research Specialist I, on Servant Leadership. Each speaker shared personal experiences, demonstrating how these values shaped their careers in science and public service.

Scholars also presented their reflections, including Alanis Mija C. Alfiler from the University of Northern Philippines and Jericho Tucay from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University South La Union Campus, offering insights on how the sessions influenced their perspectives as scholars.

A key highlight of the activity was the Gender Sensitivity Orientation delivered by Ms. Racquel M. Espiritu, Technical Scholarship Coordinator and GFPS TWG Chair of DOST Ilocos Region which emphasized the importance of fostering gender awareness, equality, and inclusivity in academic and professional environments.

The program also featured a presentation by Mr. Chaeil M. Meneses, Regional Director of DOST MAYSA, who introduced the organization and encouraged active participation in initiatives that promote collaboration, leadership, and service among DOST scholars.

An open forum followed, providing participants the opportunity to raise questions and clarify key points discussed during the sessions.
The activity concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Decth-1180 P. Libunao, Supervising Science Research Specialist and Assistant Regional Director for Field Operation Services of the DOST Ilocos Region, who encouraged scholars to uphold the values instilled during the orientation and continue striving for excellence in service of the nation, in line with the vision of “Agham na Ramdam.”

The 2026 SVFO served as a meaningful platform for reflection and growth, reinforcing the scholars’ commitment to becoming competent professionals and responsible citizens who will contribute to national development through science , technology, and innovation.//Nikko S. Ofo-ob
