Co-Founder of C & R Mini Mall, located in the island municipality of Socorro, Surigao del Norte. The business is officially registered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as C & R Department Store and operates under the trade name C & R Mini Mallโ€”a name that has become synonymous with trust and reliability in the Socorro community.

There is no road connecting Socorro to the mainland. To reach this quiet island, one must cross the water. And it was across this same stretch of sea that the story of C & R Mini Mall slowly unfoldedโ€”carried, box by box, on boats navigating the channel between Socorro and the rest of Surigao del Norte, quietly building what would become something extraordinary.

Today, a proud two-storey building stands at the heart of the municipalityโ€”fully stocked with the familyโ€™s own merchandise and serving the community with affordable, quality goods. Behind this structure is a family that refused to let geography, poverty, or circumstance define their future.

Christyl grew up watching her father pedal a trisikadโ€”an ordinary bicycle-powered pedicabโ€”along the islandโ€™s narrow roads, earning just enough to feed the family and send his children to school. There were days when even that was uncertain. Yet, their parents instilled in them values that would outlast hardship: diligence, sacrifice, and the quiet strength of perseverance.

As children, Christyl and her sisters sold small snacks around their neighborhood, chasing small coins wherever they could. They did not know it then, but they were already learning the fundamentals of entrepreneurshipโ€”resourcefulness, grit, and hustleโ€”lessons that would shape their future more than any classroom ever could.

The turning point came when Christine, the eldest, finished high school and made a life-changing decision: she left for Manila. Not just to seek opportunity for herself, but to build something that could uplift her entire family. In the city, she ventured into online selling through Facebook, starting small with a few items of clothing. What began as a modest experiment soon gained momentum. Orders trickled in, then grew steadily, until what was once a sideline became a reliable source of income.

Back in Socorro, Christyl became the operational lifeline of the business. Every order required careful coordinationโ€”goods were claimed from the mainland, loaded onto boats, and ferried across the waters to the island. Christyl managed every detail of this process with precision and care. She responded to customers, handled deliveries, and resolved concerns with a warmth that reflected the close-knit nature of their community.

And the community responded in kind. Customers returned not only for the products but for the genuine trust and care behind every transaction. In a small town where reputation travels quickly, C & R Mini Mall built a name that was both respected and relied upon.

When the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped daily life, it also revealed new opportunities. As more people turned to online shopping, C & Rโ€”already rooted in this modelโ€”found itself in a position of strength. Orders surged, and what began as a small venture demanded their full commitment. The family rose to the challenge.

What the pandemic ultimately revealed was something they had been building all along: deep community trust. That trust became the foundation for their continued growth.

Even before this surge, in 2016, the family had already taken a bold step by opening their first physical showroomโ€”a modest structure made of coconut wood. It may have been small, but it marked the moment their dream took physical form. From there, they expanded into a grocery and general merchandise business, steadily growing their operations.

Meanwhile, in Manila, Christine strengthened their supply chain by building relationships in Divisoria. What started as a single stall grew into multiple stalls through persistence and strong partnerships. While Manila provided scale and access, Socorro remained the heart of their operations.

Their most ambitious milestone came with the construction of C & R Mini Mallโ€”a two-storey department store carrying exclusively their own products. Fully owned and operated by the family, the business stands as a testament to their independence, resilience, and vision.

Christylโ€™s journey as an entrepreneur reached another milestone when she became a graduate of the DTI Kapatid Mentor Me โ€“ Money Market Encounter (KMME-MME) Program in 2021. The program equipped her with structured business knowledge, enhancing her decision-making and strengthening the operations of C & R Mini Mall. More importantly, it gave her the language and perspective to articulate what they had long been practicing intuitivelyโ€”and the foresight to scale it further.

True to their family-centered approach, Christyl shared these learnings with her loved ones, helping improve their systems, strategies, and long-term direction.

C & R Mini Mall is, at its core, a family enterpriseโ€”each member playing a vital role:
Christine โ€“ Leads overall vision, Manila operations, and supplier relations
Christyl โ€“ Oversees local operations and community engagement in Socorro
Younger Sister โ€“ Supports the Divisoria operations in Manila
Mother โ€“ Manages day-to-day store operations
Father โ€“ Their enduring inspiration, whose years of hard work laid the foundation for everything they have built

Though Christyl eventually fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher, she remains deeply involved in the business. For her, C & R Mini Mall is more than an income sourceโ€”it is living proof that every struggle they endured carried a purpose far greater than they once imagined.

From simple Facebook posts to a thriving two-storey department store. From parcels ferried across the sea to a business now firmly rooted in the community. C & R Mini Mall continues to growโ€”quietly, steadilyโ€”guided by lessons of resilience, faith, and unity.

And somewhere in Socorro, the waters still flow between the island and the mainlandโ€”carrying, as they always have, the promise of what is possible.

Meet Gelma Joy Y. Roculas, the owner of Kabayan Siargao Restaurant, a humble yet beloved Filipino dining place nestled in the peaceful municipality of San Benito, Northern Siargao, where community, culture, and simplicity flourish. Established in 2019, Kabayan Siargao gradually captured the hearts of both locals and tourists through its authentic Filipino dishes and genuine hospitality, drawing inspiration from the ownerโ€™s auntโ€™s successful Filipino restaurant in West Palm Beach, Florida, as well as from the word โ€œkabayan,โ€ meaning fellow Filipino or countryman. More than just a business name, Kabayan reflects a deeper missionโ€”to create a warm and welcoming space where people can gather, build connections, and experience the comforting flavors of home through Filipino cuisine.

From the very beginning, Kabayan Siargao Restaurant operated with humble resources but a strong passion for serving quality and affordable Filipino dishes. Managed solely by Ms. Gelma and her husband during its early years, the restaurant relied heavily on hard work, determination, and teamwork. Her husband served as the main cook while they both handled daily operations together, ensuring every meal was prepared with care and every customer felt at home.

Despite the challenges of running a small business, the couple remained committed to preserving Filipino culinary traditions through beloved dishes such as chicken inasal, sizzling sisig, pancit guisado, halo-halo, and other Filipino comfort food favorites.

As the business gradually gained recognition, Kabayan Siargao faced the common struggles experienced by many micro enterprises. Expanding market reach, improving operational efficiency, and increasing production capacity while maintaining food quality and affordability became major challenges. Yet instead of allowing these difficulties to hinder their growth, the owners used them as motivation to improve and strengthen the business further.

A significant turning point came when the business connected with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the Kapatid Mentor ME (KMME) Program. Through mentorship, entrepreneurial training, and strategic business planning, the program helped the owner develop stronger management skills and a clearer vision for Kabayan Siargaoโ€™s future. One of the most impactful achievements during the program was the creation of a strategic and comprehensive Business Improvement Plan, which later earned recognition for Excellence in Business Improvement Plan. The knowledge and guidance gained from KMME strengthened the restaurantโ€™s financial management, operational systems, decision-making, and long-term sustainability strategies.

With improved confidence and business direction, Kabayan Siargao Restaurant steadily evolved from a simple husband-and-wife-run eatery into one of Northern Siargaoโ€™s growing Filipino dining destinations. In 2023, the restaurant expanded its seating capacity and enhanced its menu offerings to accommodate more customers, larger family gatherings, and private events. This expansion also improved service efficiency and increased the restaurantโ€™s ability to cater to both local families and visiting tourists seeking authentic Filipino comfort food in a relaxing alfresco environment. Over time, the business built a loyal customer base and strengthened its reputation for quality food, friendly service, and a homey atmosphere that keeps guests coming back.

Beyond business growth, Kabayan Siargao Restaurant also became a source of livelihood and community support in San Benito. From being operated solely by the owners, the restaurant eventually grew into a small team with additional employees assisting in kitchen and customer service operations. By sourcing ingredients from nearby suppliers and continuously supporting local products, the business contributes to the local economy while promoting Filipino culture through food. As a woman entrepreneur, the owner also hopes to inspire aspiring entrepreneursโ€”especially womenโ€”to pursue their dreams despite limited beginnings or challenges along the way.

Today, Kabayan Siargao Restaurant continues to grow with a vision of becoming one of Northern Siargaoโ€™s leading Filipino restaurants. Guided by resilience, passion, and the lessons gained through the KMME Program, the business remains committed to delivering excellent customer service, maintaining food quality, and strengthening its connection with the community. In the next few years, the owners aspire to further expand operations, increase seating capacity, improve customer experience, and possibly open another branch within or beyond Northern Siargao.

More than just a restaurant, Kabayan Siargao Restaurant stands as a story of perseverance, family, culture, and shared dreamsโ€”a reminder that even the simplest beginnings can grow into something meaningful through hard work, dedication, and the support of the community.
