Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman led the turnover ceremony of a PhP20-million public market in Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur today, September 9.

The 1,200-square meter market, which features both wet and dry areas, will cater to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) of the 2017 Marawi siege.

Saguiaran Mayor Macmod Muti said the establishment of a public market not just provides livelihood for the IDPs but also resolves the problem of traffic in the municipality.

“Malaking tulong ang pagpapatayo ng public market dahil kailangang kailangan natin ito. Bukod sa matutulungan natin ang mga IDPs ng Marawi, malulutas din nito ang matinding traffic sa Saguiaran dahil mayroon nang isahan na palengke,” he said. (Bureau of Public Information)

Concluded today's trip in Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur, another area, which took in displaced families from Marawi. I have been wanting to visit the town, especially after my daughter, Tricia, told me all about her own trip there last year.

We turned over sewing machines and other materials for women dressmakers who evacuated there, like Rose Acampong, who leads this group. We also visited her family's space at the evacuation center, where she stays with the four kids she is raising by herself. It is heartbreaking to hear about how the siege has affected our fellow Filipinos, but it makes us even more determined to help our brothers and sisters rise above its aftermath.

Many thanks to our partner, Al-Mujadilah Development Foundation, for assisting us in this initiative, as well as to Mayor Macmod Muti and the local government of Saguiaran for their warm welcome.

Update from Saguiaran galing kay atty. muti ( CoS ni mayor): as of yesterday may record sila ng 1,400 families na dumating and distributed to barangays. Tapos sa municipyo may 1,000 individuals nagremain. Then may hundreds na dumadaan lang/stop over to get relief or rest before proceeding to other areas every hour daw. They have the list for those who remain in the municipality and those distributed sa household.
In terms of provision ang priority nila ay yong nasa municipyo at kulang sila para doon sa homestay. Not enough din sa mga dumadaan. Sa ngayon lahat ng dumptruck nila ay pinapunta sa iligan to get more supplies. Pero it takes hours to arrive there and travel back. So nashoshort sila.

To those who are stranded in the Municipality of Saguiaran, you can seek refuge tonight at the Municipal Grandstand located alongside the Municipal Hall. Free foods and water can also be availed of.
