The Summer Pabasa 2026 Program, organized by the Sagay City Public Library and ILoveToRead Club volunteers to promote literacy among young learners, officially concluded on May 11 at Balay Kauswagan after 15 days of implementation.
What began as a single chapter in Sagay with only 13 members has now blossomed into a thriving movement with over 100 passionate volunteers across seven chapters: Sagay, Old Sagay, Lopez Jaena, General Luna, Colonia Divina, Maquiling, and Bato, all led by ILoveToRead President Nicole Ibaรฑez.
These members, under the program with the theme: "๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐
๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐" and respective Barangay Library-in-Charge, devoted their time to helping children in the elementary level, especially non-readers and slow readers, find their voice and progress one word at a time.
"Reading is the gateway to learning," shared SP Roldan Gamao on behalf of the Vice-mayor, Narciso L. Javelosa Jr.
True to this message, the children harnessed the skill of learning and presented a lively speech choir. Each chapter also trained selected children to represent in the culmination contests.
The fruits of their hard work were showcased through three contests: Storytelling, Read-Aloud, and Arts & Crafts.
After cheers and excitement echoed throughout the halls, the audience waited in anticipation for the champions. Kyzer E. Santillian, representing the Old Sagay Chapter, bagged the winning spot in Storytelling. Lady Yassi C. Mendez from Barangay Maquiling emerged victoriously in Read-Aloud. Finally, Meassy Caraat, Prince, JM Cataluรฑa, Prince MJ Cataluรฑa, Jhea Mae Magno, and Ray Dylan Peraรฑo brought Barangay Colonia Divina to first place in Arts & Crafts.
Not only that, the volunteers performed a theater play and a special dance presentation to inspire the children. Adding to the celebration, a talented child from Barangay General Luna delivered a heartfelt singing intermission number, proving that the program nurtures talents beyond reading.
"The public library plans to reach out to other barangays to influence their youth," stated Mayor Leo Rafael "Bebo" Cueva to express his pride in the successful program, and he continued to offer his generous support.
To show appreciation and finally end the program, honorable judgesโFaith Z. Torres, Ricky P. Alvarado, and Fe Claire S. Soberanoโand volunteers were awarded certificates. At the same time, the children received certificates, medals, and envelopes filled with school supplies to ready them for the upcoming school year.
Notable figures such as Punong Barangay Hon. Alod Sayam of Old Sagay, Punong Barangay Hon. Evelyn Bernas of Lopez Jaena, Punong Barangay Hon. Miraluna Diotay of Maquiling, Punong Barangay Hon.
