DA-PCC’s icons present during festivals in Pangasinan

KalaGirl and KalaBoy, known as the icons of the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Carabao Center from its story, The Adventures of KalaGirl and Kalaboy, that champions children literacy and good nutrition, appeared during the festivities in different municipalities in Pangasinan.

The appearance was driven by the Carabao Development Program implementation of the center in the municipalities as it serves as a gradual introduction of carabao to locals in preparation of the initiative’s expansion.

Awed at the vibrance of the 2 siblings' elation, children were excited to get close with the mascots and have the opportunity to take a photograph. This warm welcome presents the hope of symbolic representation of a far-reaching future of the carabao industry, promoting carabao breeding and dairy production to provide prosperous livelihood opportunities to farming communities.

Beyond entertainment, their appearance embodies the agency's efforts to broaden its reach within the service area in order to transform and become a bridge from poverty to the rural farming communities through carapreneurship.

KalaGirl and KalaBoy made consecutive appearances in Balungao, Pangasinan, during their Balye sa Kalye Grand Parade on March 16, 2026, and in Alaminos City during the Civic Military Parade and Opening of the Agri-Trade and Tourism Expo 2026 last March 18 and 19, 2026.

This marks the continued development and sustainability of the carabao industry through the constant efforts of DA-PCC coupled with the strengthened relationship with different government agencies, institutions, and stakeholders. This hopes to provide a lasting impact that will be carried out by the next generations. [By Maximo Peralta Jr.]

Moo-ving into Action: PMT to Empower Local Dairy Farmers

In a focused effort to strengthen dairy herd health, instructors and project staff from Tarlac State University (TAU), led a training and field demonstration on Philippine Mastitis Test on April 24, 2026, in Asingan, Pangasinan, equipping farmers and the members of Bantog Samahang Nayon Multipurpose Cooperative with practical skills to detect and prevent mastitis cases at the farm level.

This initiative is in collaboration with DA-PCC at DMMMSU, the activity combined technical briefings, live demonstrations and visual aids that guided participants from sample collection to interpretation of test results which was held at Dairy Box Asingan on April 24, 2026.

California Mastitis Test Reagent has long been the standard reagent used for Mastitis Testing. However, this reagent is significantly expensive and imposes import limitations. The project team emphasized that this issue hinders regular testing that may possibly lead to financial losses if not detected at an early stage.

The Project team emphasized that the PMT, developed locally as a low-cost alternative to commercial reagents, demonstrated high accuracy in trials and can be produced at a fraction of the cost, a point highlighted by a poster claiming the PMT is several times more cost-effective than the standard test.

Paul Andrew Texon, Alternate Dairy SafetyCompliance Officer, underscored the necessity of monthly conduct of mastitis test for securing an NDA-LTO. He emphasized that consistent testing will not only fulfill regulatory compliance but also ensure food safety and prevent potential income loss.

Von Mark Yuzon, Instructor I & Project Staff, opened the session with an action-oriented presentation on hygienic milk handling, demonstrating proper udder preparation, sanitation of milking equipment and safe milk storage.

Following Yuzon, Catherine Diane De Guzman, Instructor I & Project Leader, led a dynamic demonstration of the Philippine Mastitis Test. Visual materials displayed during the activity include research posters on PMT development, instructional dilution charts and the PMT bottle itself reinforce the test’s formulation, cost-effectiveness, and field application. Farmers were able to perform the test on their own milk samples themselves under supervision and interpret the results based on its consistency.

TAU staff emphasized that the formulated PMT will empower farmers to detect mastitis cases at an early stage, allowing them to anticipate potential issues and implement preventive measures effectively.

The training stressed integration of routine screening paired with improved milk handling practices can lead to earlier detection, and prompt treatment, resulting in a measurable gain in milk quality and yield.

By the end of the day, the combination of live demonstrations, instructional posters, and hands-on practice left participants better prepared to protect udder health and improve farm profitability. [by: Jessabel Galiste]

Growing Beyond the Books: 12 OJT trainees culminates internship in carapreneruship

The culmination of 12 on-the-job trainees of Bachelor of Agriculture Major in Animal Husbandry from Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College – Sta Maria Campus on April 27, 2026 at the DA-PCC at DMMMSU office in Baroro, Bacnotan, La Union marked the end of their 27-day immersion that strengthened both their technical skills and values essential to agriculture.

Throughout the program, trainees engaged to critical areas of the dairy industry which includes animal health and welfare, feeding management and hygienic milk practices. These experiences underscored the importance of the dairy sector as one of the pillars of Philippine agriculture, with trainees envisioning a future where more farmers will engage in buffalo dairy industry to sustain local milk production.

Testimonials from OJTs reflected both professional growth and personal transformation. John Michael and Luis Christian Javier, who immersed in Rockyside Integrated Farm and Matteo Kiddos Farm, respectively, shared how patience was cultivated, adaptability was strengthened, and relationships were built during their stay. They emphasized that farming is not just about carabaos. They also learned about vermicomposting, production of azolla, and food processing of dairy products.

In her inspirational message, DA-PCC at DMMMSU Center Chief Vilma Gagni, reminded the trainees of the nobility of their profession. “For agriculturists, our work is noble. It is not only for ourselves, but also for our country,” she emphasized.

Her words resonated deeply, reinforcing the idea that the beauty of agriculture lies in service beyond oneself and igniting the passion of the futures of the agriculture industry. [by: Jessabel V. Galiste]

DA-PCC rolls out new toned milk formulation for Milk Feeding Program

The DA-Philippine Carabao Center’s Product Development and Innovation Unit (DA-PCC-PDIU) launched a series of orientation and training activities nationwide to introduce the new toned milk formulation in preparation for the implementation of the Milk Feeding Program (MFP). The North Luzon cluster was the first to participate, bringing together farmers’ cooperatives and associations (FCAs) and program implementers from the region.

Participants, including cooperatives affiliated with DA-PCCs at Cagayan State University, Mariano Marcos State University, and Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, gathered for the activity on May 5, 2026, in Lucap, Alaminos City, Pangasinan. Representatives from FCAs, alongside DA-PCC Carabao-based Enterprise Development staff and other program implementers, joined the session aimed at improving accessibility, participation, and technical preparedness among stakeholders.

Each cooperative was represented by one delegate, preferably from production or quality assurance, ensuring that technical expertise was present during the orientation.

Zyrah Marie Zapanta, PDIU staff member, set the rollout in motion by discussing the milk feeding policy, microbiological and physico-chemical requirements for milk, and the differences between the old and new formulations of toned milk. She stated the importance of the requirements for the milk feeding program and how compliance with these may affect consumer safety.

Johnrae Maraña, another PDIU staff, emphasized the importance of good manufacturing practices in ensuring food safety in milk handling from source to finished products. He explained how simple practices, such as wearing personal protective equipment and proper handwashing, can greatly affect the final quality of milk products.

The activity also featured hands-on milk quality testing and processing of toned milk using the new formulation. [By: Jessabel Galiste]

ARBO beneficiaries gears up for carapreneurship

To enhance farmers’ technical competencies in buffalo herd management, dairy production, and sustainable farming practices, farmers from the Asenso Pinmilapil Farmers Association Inc., Agrarian Reform Beneficiary Organization (ARBO), participated in a comprehensive two-day Buffalo Production and Management Training held on April 15-16, 2026.

The training was spearheaded by the DA-PCC at DMMMSU in collaboration with the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Pangasinan. ARBOs, which were established as part of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), give recipients access to livelihood programs, collective land management, and financial and technical assistance.

Led by GIP Coordinator Reynaldo Paneda, the activity was designed to provide participants with essential knowledge and hands-on skills on how to efficiently manage buffalo farming activities.

Topics included were breeding, nutrition, disease control, and hygienic milk handling practices. The training was not only about improving productivity but also about safeguarding animal health and ensuring profitability through sustainable practices.

“We want our farmers to see buffalo production not just as traditional livestock raising but as a viable enterprise that can uplift their communities,” Paneda emphasized.

The training combined lecture-discussions, video presentations, and interactive Q&A sessions with practical exposure through farm visitation. Center staff highlighted the importance of proper nutrition, disease prevention, and breeding techniques in ensuring healthy herds and consistent milk yields.

One of the highlights of the program was the farm visit in Rockyside Integrated Farm and Dairy Box located in Rosario La Union, where participants observed firsthand the operations of a successful dairy farm. Farmers were able to see modern practices in action such as using milking machines for the milk collection. They also experienced how to milk a buffalo manually which at first were numbing, but overtime becomes manageable.

However, Armando Ladia, a former DA-PCC at DMMMSU staff, explained, “It's really hard to pump milk at first, but it just takes practice.” He also demonstrated the proper way of hand milking a buffalo. By his demonstration, the farmers and DAR staff were enticed to try.

After the demonstration, Annalyn Tade, carapreneur of Rockyside Integrated Farm shared her inspirational messages to the farmers.

“Taking care of an animal is not automatic, it needs to work. It does not give an automatic outcome when you just started with one animal. Starting with one animal will progress us into an enterprise built from the lowest level.”

The visit allowed them to connect theory with practice, reinforcing the lessons learned during lectures.

Dairy Box Elyu were also one of the places they visited. Tade showcased their food processing facilities, which includes the milk processing area and the baking area, and marketing outlet. As of today, the Dairy Box Elyu begun transitioning to using machines like pasteurizer and homogenizer but she said, “These machines were just a risky investment. However, before any of these, we started our processing facility with only using ten double boilers for our processing of milk drinks.”

Their visit to the dairy box showed them the possibility of building an enterprise through dairy farming. The testimonies from Annalyn Tade showed how a small processing facility builds to becoming a buffalo dairy enterprise.

Additionally, the training focused on how buffalo production may improve socioeconomic conditions, especially in the establishment of dairy enterprises, which can give rural families a stable source of income.

Participants expressed optimism about the future of buffalo farming in their community. Dominga Madriaga, one of the ARBO beneficiaries, shows her excitement on learning new things.

“It is a great feeling to learn more things about buffalo management, especially in milking the buffaloes where we experience firsthand how to properly do hand milking,” she stated.

The farmers now know more clearly how to properly care for buffaloes and how their association can turn dairy production into a sustainable source of income. Stronger dairy businesses in Sison, Pangasinan are anticipated to result from the training, boosting rural economic development and food security.
