What to Eat, What to Limit, and Why It Matters
As we celebrate Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we are reminded that a healthy lifestyle can play an important role in the prevention of colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer affecting men and women worldwide. While certain risk factors, such as age, family history and genetics, can increase the likelihood of developing colorectal cancer, many cases are attributed to certain lifestyle choices, including diet and physical activity (American Cancer Society, 2024; World Health Organization, 2023)
Good nutrition has an impact on the digestion and on the general health of the body. A healthy diet helps to keep the colon healthy and also helps to ward off disease. Eating right can help to cut the risk of certain diseases, including colorectal cancer. Research suggests that healthy dietary patterns and regular physical activity may help reduce the risk of several types of cancer, including colorectal cancer (American Institute for Cancer Research, 2018; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024).

๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ-๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ helps keep the digestive system healthy. Consuming plenty of fiber from whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes ensures smooth bowel movement and keeps the colon functioning correctly. The fiber speeds up the movement of waste material through the digestive tract, thus potentially cutting down our exposure to carcinogens (American Institute for Cancer Research, 2018).
Eating a ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ฒ๐ด๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ๐ is also recommended. These foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help protect body cells from damage and contribute to overall health (World Health Organization, 2023).
Studies also suggest that ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐บ-๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ณ๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ may help protect the colon. Foods such as milk, yogurt, cheese, and certain leafy vegetables provide calcium that may support the health of the colon lining and help regulate normal cell function (National Cancer Institute, 2023).
In addition, choosing ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ถ๐ป such as fish, poultry, beans, and nuts is recommended. These foods provide important nutrients while helping reduce the intake of unhealthy fats commonly found in processed meats (American Cancer Society, 2024).

Most foods do not have a direct relationship with colorectal cancer, but there are some dietary patterns that may have the potential to increase the risk if these foods are eaten frequently or in large quantities.
Regular consumption of ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐, including hotdogs, bacon, sausages, and other cured meats, increases the risk of colorectal cancer. These foods are high in preservatives and chemicals that can affect colon tissues (World Health Organization, 2023; American Institute for Cancer Research, 2018).
๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ like beef, pork and lamb is also another thing to try and eat less of, especially if you are eating large portions.
Another important step in maintaining a healthy diet is reducing the intake of ๐ณ๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ ๐ต๐ถ๐ด๐ต ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ป๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต๐ ๐ณ๐ฎ๐๐, ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐๐ด๐ฎ๐ฟ๐, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐น๐ฐ๐ผ๐ต๐ผ๐น, as these may contribute to poor health outcomes and increased disease risk (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024). Following balanced dietary guidelines, such as those recommended for Filipinos, can help promote better health and disease prevention (Department of Health, 2020).

A healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. In addition to a proper diet, other key recommendations include regular physical activity, a normal body weight and refraining from cigarette smoking (American Cancer Society, 2024)
Regular health screening and early detection is just as important. People with higher risk are especially advised to undergo early screening. Early detection gives more opportunity to manage the disease with effective treatment (National Cancer Institute, 2023).
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is an important time to remember to always spread the word about awareness, healthy eating and taking preventive measures to promote health. What can you do today to make a difference in your health tomorrow?
