There is something quietly beautiful about the Scout Benediction.
At the end of a gathering, when two hands rise and voices become one, it feels like the closing of a chapter.
But I have come to understand that it is not a goodbye.
Those two raised hands
do not close the story.
They leave something openโ
a promise,
a prayer,
a quiet hope
that the paths we take apart
will someday cross again.
And maybe that is why,
after the Benediction,
we clap.
Not because the moment is over,
but because something in us
is still carrying it forward.
The applause feels like a bridge
between the goodbye we think we are saying
and the reunion we are quietly hoping for.
It is as if, with every clap,
we are saying:
Thank you for being here.
Thank you for walking this trail with me.
Until our paths cross again.
Because in Scouting,
not every ending is a goodbye.
Some people leave the circle
only to find their way back to it someday.
Some journeys take us to distant places,
under different skies,
through different seasons,
yet somehow,
the same Scout spirit continues to lead us home.
And when we raise our hands,
we are not saying that this moment is over.
We are simply entrusting it
to the days aheadโ
to the roads we have yet to walk,
the camps we have yet to share,
and the moments when,
after years or even a lifetime apart,
we may once again find ourselves
standing beside one another,
under the same sky,
with the same spirit in our hearts.
So, maybe the Scout Benediction
was never meant to mark the end of our gathering.
It is a quiet prayer
for another beginning.
And the applause that follows
is our way of sending that prayer into the worldโ
that wherever the trail takes us,
no matter how far we wander,
we will find our way back
to the circle,
and to one another.
