The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), in partnership with Bureau of Fisheries Research and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Office 2, is set to implement Research for Development (R4D) projects to strengthen resource management measures and climate resiliency of the region’s fisheries sector.

Among the R4D projects reviewed were: 1) Eel Stock Assessment and Resources Management (SEAFDEC-ASEAN); 2) Climate Risk Vulnerability Assessment Tool Development in Region 2 (DA-Climate Resilient in Agriculture Office); and 3) Host-Parasite Connections of Trematodes in the Cagayan River (DOST-Japan Society for the Promotion of Science)

These high-impact projects are expected to boost the fisheries sector by establishing relevant data collection systems, and emerging tools to identify risks from climate change.

NFRDI, led by Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos and Eunice Bognot, met with BFAR 2 Regional Director Dr. Angel Encarnacion to plan and discuss the timeline and deliverables and ensure efficient project implementation, on March 16-17, 2022.

Follow-up activities on the Ludong project, led by Evelyn Ame of BFAR 2, were also conducted. The project that started in 2019 aims to enhance conservation measures of the species.

Thanks to the support of Department of Agriculture Secretary William Dollente Dar, Undersecretary for Agri-Industrialization and for Fisheries Cheryll Marie Natividad-Caballero, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources National Director Eduardo B. Gongona and National Fisheries Research and Development Institute Executive Director Lilian C. Garcia CESO V.

3. FishVool Instruction Manual

These publications aim to provide baseline information, reduce postharvest losses through best practices, and provide effective data collection to assess potential impacts of climate change on the fisheries sector.
