An interesting and a beauty, this 1835 Lima MM Peru 8 Reales deserves a closer look. The host coin carries the scarce “POR AL UNION” legend error in place of the usual “POR LA UNION.”

The surfaces show honest circulation wear with natural gray toning, while the main elements remain clear and the crowned Y.II. countermark is still strongly impressed at the center. An amazing piece that does not appear regularly in the market.

This piece shows attractive blue, brown, and reddish toning, with strong details remaining on both sides.

When this coin was issued in 1928, the Philippine peso was fixed at ₱2 to US$1. In practical terms, ₱1 was officially equal to 50 U.S. cents, reflecting how closely the Philippine monetary system was tied to the United States during the American period.

PCGS currently records 11 examples in MS64BN, with 7 graded higher.

The Philippine “Y.II.” countermark is seen on an 1810-M IA Spain 20 Reales, a host coin that is not commonly encountered in the Philippine countermarked series. That makes the piece interesting even before looking at the strength of the countermark itself.

The host coin shows clear circulation and natural wear, but the main details are still easy to recognize — the portrait, date, legends, and crowned arms all remain visible. The Y.II. countermark is strong and well defined, giving the coin a lot of character.

One of the best parts of dealing in numismatics is that there is always something new to discover. Pieces like this show how much depth there still is in the Philippine market, and how serious collectors continue to bring important material back home.

Our September 2026 grading shipment is now in preparation. Submissions for coins, banknotes, comics, stamps, and trading cards will be accepted until September 30, 2026. Items submitted on or before the cut-off date will be included in the September shipment.

Submissions received after September 30 will be processed for the succeeding shipment, allowing us to continue providing seamless service to our clients.
