Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park & World Heritage Site The Official page of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park The Park features a spectacular limestone or karst mountain landscape.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the most distinguished protected areas of the Philippines. It is located some 360 miles southwest of Manila, the countryโ€™s political and economic capital. It was established as a National Park in 1971primarily to protect and preserve the intact old growth forest, interesting wildlife, pristine white sand beaches, unspoiled natural beau

ty and one of the most impressive caves systems in the world. It contains an 8.2 km long underground river that flows directly to the sea. The lower half of the river is brackish and subject to the oceans tide. A subterranean river flowing directly into the sea and the associated tidal influence makes it the most unique natural phenomenon of its type to exist. The presence of 11 minerals, scientifically and aesthetically unique speleothems, and a 20 million year old Serenia fossil embedded in the walls of the cave justifies the declaration of the Puerto Princesa Underground River as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The Park also contains a full mountain to sea ecosystems and protects forests that are important for biodiversity conservation. It is a representative of Palawan Moist Forests, which are among the most significant in Asia, and is noted for high levels of regional and local endemism. The Site serves as habitat to numerous endangered, rare and endemic wildlife species. In the coastal area, mangroves, sea grass beds and coral reefs are found. The global significance of the Park is recognized by its designation as a World Heritage Site, a Biosphere Reserve, a Ramsar Site, and an Important Bird Area. Inclusion to these prestigious lists confirms the outstanding universal value of the Park that deserves to be conserved for the benefit of the present and future generations. The Park managed by the City Government of Puerto Princesa thru a multi sector Protected Area Management Board (PAMB). It has the distinction of being the first national park devolved and successfully managed by a local government unit. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a source of pride and a key element in the identity of the people of Puerto Princesa in particular and of the Philippines as a whole. It is a symbol of commitment by the Filipino people in the global efforts to conserve our natural heritage.

Epic Journeys, Tiny Travelers. On this day, we celebrate sea turtles! ๐Ÿข

Amidst the prevailing threats faced by marine wildlife, witnessing hatchlings slowly make their way toward the ocean remains a remarkable conservation successโ€”one continuously celebrated by the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP).

The PPSRNP, together with partner stakeholders and the local communities, continues to strengthen its conservation efforts for the three endangered sea turtle species nesting within PPSRNP: the ๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ ๐—ง๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜๐—น๐—ฒ, ๐—›๐—ฎ๐˜„๐—ธ๐˜€๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น ๐—ง๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜๐—น๐—ฒ, and ๐—ข๐—น๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—ง๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜๐—น๐—ฒ.

In PPSRNP, the sea turtle nesting season usually begins in November and lasts until April, with the highest number of eggs commonly recorded in January. To help ensure the survival of these hatchlings, key protection efforts are implemented such as regular beach patrolling, the appropriate handling and transfer of eggs to hatcheries, minimizing artificial lighting along beaches, and strictly prohibiting dogs from entering nesting areas during the nesting season.

As of the first quarter of 2026, the PPSRNP Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) recorded a total of ๐Ÿฏ,๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿด ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€ successfully released into the ocean. Along the Sabang Beach where hotel establishments are located, many of these releases are witnessed by hotel guests, employees, park staff, and local residents. Beyond the excitement these moments bring, they also serve as a quiet reminder of the vulnerability of these small marine creatures.

Sea turtles at PPSRNP play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem. Aside from helping sustain seagrass beds and coral reefs and controlling jellyfish populations, sea turtles also contribute significantly to local ecotourism. However, climate change and increasing coastal developments continue to expose nesting sites and eggs to greater risks. Without the assistance of concerned individuals and partner agencies, many eggs would not survive strong waves and extreme weather conditions.

One of the most sensitive phases in the life cycle of sea turtles is the egg-laying period. Disturbing nesting females may cause them to abandon their burrows, putting the hatchlings at risk. This is why community cooperation and responsible tourism remain essential.

This World Turtle Day, be one with us in protecting these ancient creatures. Whether it is refusing single-use plastics that choke our waters, respecting wildlife boundaries on your next encounter with them, or actively supporting local conservation efforts, your choices ripple outward. No action is too small!

In commemoration of the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on May 22, 1992, this yearโ€™s International Day for Biological Diversity campaign emphasizes the importance and impact of local actions in achieving global ambitions. With the theme: โ€œ๐˜ˆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜จ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ตโ€, everyone from all walks of lifeโ€”governments, businesses, students, indigenous people, and local communitiesโ€”is encouraged to take part as essential contributors in the progress of the campaignโ€™s 2050 Vision of Living in Harmony with Nature.

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a biodiversity hotspot in Palawan as it satisfies two primary Outstanding Universal Value criteria, such as possessing an excellent natural beauty and a globally significant habitat for biodiversity conservation. From its magnificent rock formations to the variety of endemic species living in the park, everything definitely leaves bare eyes in awe.

Comprising 22,202 hectares and covering the barangays of Tagabinet, Cabayugan, Marufinas, and New Panggangan, the Park encompasses a full mountain-to-sea ecosystem that safeguards significant forest areas within Palawan. ๐—”๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜ ๐˜๐˜†๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—”๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฎ, ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฃ๐—ฃ๐—ฆ๐—ฅ๐—ก๐—ฃ, namely: beach forest, mangrove forest, freshwater swamp forest, riverine forest, lowland evergreen forest, forest over limestone soil, forest over ultramafic soil, and montane forest.

Aside from being a natural habitat, the Park also extends across ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—”๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐——๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—–๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—บ๐˜€ (๐—–๐—”๐——๐—–) ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜‡๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€, including the Tagbanua and Batak tribes, as well as the Diwans or lowlanders. These communities rely heavily on agriculture and tourism for their livelihood. Most of the park personnel are local residents from nearby communities, and the continued growth of tourism not only benefits them, but also supports both small and large businesses operating within and beyond the park. However, these groups are not merely beneficiariesโ€”they also serve as eco-guardians, protecting the park through their collective efforts.

Moreover, the ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†-๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ง๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—บ (๐—–๐—•๐—ฆ๐—ง) initiatives within PPSRNP continue to strengthen the Parkโ€™s sustainable economic development. These include Sabang Mangrove; Jungle Trail; Isla Filomena; Sabang Pyamaluguan Waterfalls; Sabang X Zipline; and Sabang Sea Ferry Multipurpose Cooperative. Instead of large corporations, local residents were entrusted with the operation and management of these tourism projects and this initiative not only empowers the local economy, but also supports the livelihood of the local residents.

For years, as one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, PPSRNP has remained steadfast in its goal not only to bring joy and satisfaction to visitors, but also to embody inclusive management of the parkโ€™s ecosystem. From international tourists to local guests, everyone is encouraged to leave the park better than they found it. The diverse flora and fauna, magnificent cave systems, and mineral formations within PPSRNP are so pristine that they are meant to be admired with the eyes, not touched with the hands. This reflects the Parkโ€™s daily reminder: โ€œ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜บ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ต ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ต ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ด.โ€

The well-being of PPSRNP does not solely rely on the efforts of the central management, NGOs, Indigenous Peoples, LGUs, and local residents. International and local visitors are likewise essential contributors to the success of conservation efforts.
This begins with compliance with park regulations such as: โ€œNo Smoking/No Vaping,โ€ โ€œNo Single-Use Plastics,โ€ โ€œClean As You Go,โ€ โ€œNo Touching or Feeding of Monkeys,โ€ โ€œNo Swimming,โ€ and โ€œNo Food or Drinks.โ€ These may seem simple, but violating such rules can harm the parkโ€™s delicate ecosystem. Everyone who sets foot in the park carries the responsibility of preserving it in the same condition, or even better, for future generations.

With all these efforts, the continued commitment of the Parkโ€™s management, stakeholders, local communities, and Indigenous Peoples to strengthen the implementation of conservation measures gradually stabilizes human-wildlife interactions and promotes responsible behavior within the Park. From active stewardship to higher compliance with park regulations, these initiatives mean a great deal for both present and future generations who deserve to witness something as spectacular as PPSRNP.

In addition, the Puerto Princesa Underground River, the Puerto Princesaโ€™s premier destination, observes an annual activity called โ€œ๐™‡๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š๐™ง ๐™๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉโ€ during the first three days of July, wherein no tours are conducted. This allows the river a moment of solitude, free from even the slightest human interference.

Through its continuous commitment to upholding ecological integrity and sustainable ecosystem management, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park joins the International Day for Biological Diversity Campaign. From local to global, collective small actions create the biggest impact. Let us act, connect, and share. There is no single way to help reverse biodiversity lossโ€”it can take countless shapes and forms, fostering wider local efforts that can reach far beyond communities and borders.

Following its growing popularity across the country for its exciting blend of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton, pickleball has officially arrived in Sitio Sabang, Bgy. Cabayugan, Puerto Princesa City.

Four Points by Sheraton Palawan successfully held the grand opening of its pickleball facility in Sitio Sabang, Bgy. Cabayugan, Puerto Princesa City, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The event gathered hotel employees, guests, and local stakeholders, including our Protected Area Superintendent, Atty. Christine N. Longno, together with Supply and Property Management Custodian Ernesto Lapuz Jr.; Tourism Development Officer Melody Joy Corvera; and Tourism Operations Officer Daryl Kaye Labastida.

During the program, Ms. Khyshana Hitosis introduced the background, fundamentals, and health benefits of pickleball. Participants also enjoyed a friendly exhibition match following a demonstration of the gameโ€™s basic rules for singles and doubles play.

Promoting an active lifestyle, fostering fun and meaningful engagement, and strengthening connections among the local community, leaders, and guests through sports are among the primary goals of this initiative. More importantly, this milestone opens exciting opportunities for future sports and community-centered events not only at Four Points by Sheraton, but also within Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park and the greater Sabang community.

Indeed, the game is on!

A study visit and knowledge exchange at the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park was successfully conducted on 9 May 2026, with the participation of government representatives from various areas in Vietnam, including Da Nang City, Hue City, and Quang Tri Province. The activity was facilitated by WWF-Philippines and WWF-Vietnam through the efforts of Ms. Joann Binondo and Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hai, respectively.

As part of the visit, the Vietnam delegation first experienced the Underground River tour, followed by the Sabang Mangrove Paddle Boat Tour, where they gained valuable insights into community-based ecotourism initiatives and biodiversity conservation efforts led by local stakeholders. The activity concluded with a meaningful dialogue and knowledge-sharing session with the Protected Area Management Office, headed by Protected Area Superintendent Atty. Christine N. Longno, together with Biodiversity Conservation and Protection Division Head Mr. Nevong Puna, HR Head Mr. Winefredo Paduga III, and Mr. Ernesto Lapuz, Jr.. The officials shared key information on the parkโ€™s management systems, conservation strategies, community engagement initiatives, and governance approaches that promote sustainable tourism, biodiversity protection, and improved local livelihoods.

The delegation was likewise joined by officers of the Sabang Mangrove Paddle Boat Tour Guide Service Cooperative, including Lady Mangrove Brigida C. Moyano, Project Manager Celistino A. Santander, and Vice President Jean Lumogdang, who shared their experiences and best practices in community-based sustainable tourism (CBST) management. They emphasized the vital role of local communities in advancing conservation efforts and sustainable tourism development within the protected area.
