𝗣𝗨𝗘𝗥𝗧𝗢 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗔 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗦𝗘𝗔 𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

​The City Environment and Natural Resources Office of Puerto Princesa, through its Wildlife Management Services Division, celebrated 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗮 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗮 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 at Simpocan National High School on August 20, 2026.

​With the theme "𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒄𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑮𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆," the Office of the City ENRO conducted an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign across several classrooms. The session aimed to raise awareness about sea turtle biology and emphasize the importance of protecting their populations in the coastal waters of Puerto Princesa City.

​This year's celebration was made possible through the unwavering support of the 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗮, the Barangay Local Government Units (BLGUs) of the west coast communities, and their local officials: Kgd. Alfredo Fabro and Kgd. Daniel Anjana of ​𝗕𝗴𝘆. 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻; Kapt. Rollie Magbanua and IPMR Jonathan Dalindig of 𝗕𝗴𝘆. 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻; Kapt. Gerry Acosta, Kgd. Gilda Eleazar, Kgd. Belmo Canillo, Kgd. Marvin Zafra Sarol, and IPMR Florencio Israel of 𝗕𝗴𝘆. 𝗡𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗮𝗻; Kgd. Melquiades Cadis of ​𝗕𝗴𝘆. 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗻; as well as the teaching personnel of 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 and their OIC Ms. Liza Mae Manga.

𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗬 𝗕𝗘𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 🍯🐝

Today, 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟱, we celebrate the cute, buzzing heroes that keep our gardens vibrant and our plates full.

In the Philippines, honey bees do so much more than produce sweet honey. Just like any other insect pollinators, they serve as the backbone of our local agriculture. Without their tireless pollination, we wouldn't have our favorite sweet mangoes, our morning kapeng barako, calamansi, coconuts, and other agricultural crops. Our food security and the livelihoods of countless local farmers depend directly on these incredible insects. Let us do our part and help protect their population.

​Celebrated every 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁, this observance began in 2009 when passionate beekeepers pushed for a "𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆" to honor the incredible work of these insects and the beekeeping industry that sustains them.

Every 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟰, we celebrate 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘆, a special time to appreciate these extraordinary, cold-blooded creatures that play a vital role in our ecosystems. From keeping pest populations in check to supporting healthy food webs, lizards are far more than just quick-footed reptiles – they are indispensable indicators of environmental health.

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘆 was initiated by passionate reptile enthusiasts, educators, and conservation groups who wanted to shatter the myths surrounding these often-misunderstood animals. Over the years, this informal holiday has grown into an international awareness campaign, bringing together wildlife organizations, zoos, and nature lovers to advocate for habitat protection and reptile conservation across the globe.

𝙏𝙐𝙍𝙉𝙊𝙑𝙀𝙍 𝙊𝙁 𝘾𝙊𝙉𝙁𝙄𝙎𝘾𝘼𝙏𝙀𝘿 𝘾𝙃𝘼𝙄𝙉𝙎𝘼𝙒𝙎 𝙏𝙊 𝙋𝘾𝙎𝘿𝙎

The City Environment and Natural Resources Office through the Protected Area Management Services Division formally turned over six (6) units of confiscated chainsaws to the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS). The chainsaws were confiscated from protected and conservation areas within the City of Puerto Princesa.

The confiscation of equipment used in the commission of offenses is part of the mandate of the City ENRO in managing and protecting our forestlands and conservation areas from destruction. The City Government remains committed to safeguarding the city’s watersheds and critical habitats.

This turnover to PCSDS is in line with inter-agency collaboration to ensure proper custody, documentation, and appropriate disposition of confiscated items, and to strengthen the protection of our environment for present and future generations.

Today, 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟰, we celebrate one of nature’s most mysterious and indispensable birds. Far beyond their iconic, wide-eyed gaze and quiet flight, owls play an important role in maintaining healthy, functioning ecosystems across the globe.

Often celebrated as the Philippines’ 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿, Palawan also serves as a critical refuge for several unique nocturnal birds, making it a globally significant sanctuary for night-dwelling avian life. Below are some of the owl species that reside in the dense canopies of Palawan's forests.

𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 | 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

The Office of the City ENRO, through the Forest Management Services Division (FMSD), assisted the tree planting activity conducted by Palawan Group of Companies last August 1, 2026, at Sitio Pulang-Lupa, Brgy. Montible, this City. This activity is part of their corporate social responsibility and commitment to environmental sustainability.

Around 2,000 seedlings of native species, including Akle (𝘈𝘭𝘣𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘤𝘭𝘦) , Amugis (𝘒𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮), Bangluan (𝘈𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘱.), Ipil (𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘴𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘫𝘶𝘨𝘢), Putian (𝘚𝘺𝘻𝘺𝘨𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘭𝘦𝘶𝘤𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘯), and Tanabag (𝘗𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘢) were planted. The Office of the City ENRO provided technical assistance in the identification and preparation of the planting site, as well as the provision of other suitable tree species.

Since 2023, the Palawan Group of Companies has been conducting annual tree planting activities, marking this year as their fourth consecutive year of contributing to the rehabilitation of the area.

This initiative is one of the strategies in protecting and conserving the terrestrial forest in Barangay Montible.

As part of the celebration of the 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗡𝗥𝗢), through its 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, conducted a Tree Health Care Orientation and Hands-On Training at the Old City Hall Lobby and Cascading Park on July 25, 2026.

The activity was attended by members of the 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (YES-O Sicsican NHS) from 𝗦𝗶𝗰𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹. The program aimed to educate participants on proper tree care and maintenance while promoting environmental stewardship and the preservation of native tree species.

The orientation was led by 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗭𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗼, Division Chief of the Forest Management Services Division, who discussed the importance of tree health care in ensuring the healthy growth and longevity of trees. She also emphasized the significance of preserving native tree species and introduced the participants to the different sub-parks within Balayong People's Park.

Meanwhile, 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗻 delivered a lecture on proper tree care and maintenance, highlighting essential practices that contribute to the health and sustainability of urban trees.

𝗠𝗿. 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 discussed tree surgery and pruning procedures, demonstrating appropriate techniques for maintaining tree structure, improving tree health, and ensuring public safety. He also demonstrated proper pruning techniques by pruning the branches of a Talisay tree (𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘢) at Cascading Park, providing participants with a practical example of how correct pruning supports healthy tree growth and reduces potential hazards.

𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗲𝗱 introduced the various species of Balayong trees and other tree species found within Friendship Park and Cascading Park, providing participants with a deeper appreciation of the city's rich urban forest.

The activity reinforced the City's commitment to environmental conservation by equipping young environmental advocates with practical knowledge and skills in tree health care, ultimately encouraging them to become active partners in protecting and nurturing the city's natural resources.

Between terrestrial and marine ecosystems grows another important biome on our planet. In the interface of land and sea, the 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 plays a crucial part in the lives of many organisms, including us humans. Mangroves support the continuous flourishing of biological diversity, secure the safety of coastal communities against weather disasters and erosion, and enhance food security, while their soil helps regulate the climate by acting as a 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗸. These incredible services help us achieve three Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 13 (𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻), SDG 14 (𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿), and SDG 15 (𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱).

​According to zu Ermgassen, P.S.E., Worthington, T.A., Gair, J.R. et al. (2025), 𝟳𝟬𝟬 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 are estimated to rely on mangroves globally. Furthermore, recent studies state that about 𝟰𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 native to the mangrove ecosystem are globally threatened with extinction.

In a scientific assessment cited by UNESCO, mangroves are said to be disappearing three to five times faster compared to total terrestrial forest losses globally. ​This celebration is a call to every Puerto Princesan that today will always be the perfect time to protect our 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, and the cost-free ecological benefits that they provide should never be taken for granted.

​The 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 celebration was established by UNESCO in 2015. It is an initiative that aims to raise awareness about their ecological benefits and the current crisis that this vital ecosystem faces.
