The Balayong People's Park Project was initialized as part of the Urban Forestry Project to promote the positive effect of a green environment aesthetically as well as promote environment consciousness in the City. The project intends to make the environment have cleaner and cooler air as it helps in mitigating air pollution, it will enhance economic stability by attracting more tourists, it will
promote a healthy lifestyle of the community by doing physical activities outdoor with a greener surrounding, and it will lead to more opportunities for social interaction of the community with the facilities incorporated in the project. The project's main attraction is the Palawan cherry tree (sp. Cassia javanica subsp. javanica ) or locally known as the "Balayong" that bears white to light pink flowers in full bloom from March to April, widely spread in Puerto Princesa City as well as the province of Palawan. To maintain a wholesome and balanced ecology in the government center, it is essential to be complemented by creating a nature's park to preserve and enhance the environment. The Balayong Park is created as a people's park contributed by the Filipino citizens to be an eco-tourism attraction and civic space dedicated to the different generations. The project will also be incorporated with other flowering trees such as Banaba and Golden Shower, trees that promote bird attraction such as Bignay and Inyam, forest trees that are endemic in Palawan such as Narra, Kamagong, Ipil, Amugis, Tanabag, and other endemic tree species. The Balayong park also aims to balance the ecology by neglecting invasive tree species that overwhelm or hinder native tree species' growth, threatening the ecosystem if left unrestrained, could inflict the environment or harm human health. The majority of trees that will be transferred/earthballed to Balayong park will be from along the national highway and city roads that will be affected by road widening projects and trees planted by the community to contribute to the people's park.
