Teodoro, Jr. introduced a vision of the Philippines as an 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀, in his plenary remarks at the 23rd IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Sunday. Anchored on four key principles – sovereignty and territorial integrity, the international rule of law, ASEAN centrality, and deterrence – the concept envisions the Philippines as a convergence hub for like-minded countries in a fragmenting world.

In light of ongoing conflicts abroad, the Defense Chief likewise emphasized the need for the international order to protect migrant workers from the Philippines and other smaller countries, whose contributions sustain the global economy.⁩

🇵🇭🤝🇯🇵 | Secretary of National Defense Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. and Japan Minister of Defense Shinjiro Koizumi discussed the continued strengthening of Philippines-Japan defense relations and growing convergence, building on the momentum of the recent Leaders’ Summit in Tokyo.

On the sidelines of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue on Sunday, both sides welcomed the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, highlighting expanded opportunities for defense and security cooperation. The Ministers also highlighted Japan’s participation in Exercise Balikatan as a reflection of the deepening partnership and looked forward to the commencement of negotiations on an agreement concerning the protection of classified information to further enhance interoperability and deterrence.
