The Environmental Management Bureau Region IX (EMB IX), in partnership with Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ) and Zamboanga Trail Runners (ZTR), leads the 4th Annual Trail Plogging Activity today in celebration of World Environment Day 2026, mobilizing hundreds of environmental advocates in a united effort to combat plastic pollution and promote environmental responsibility.
A total of 209 participants from government agencies, academic institutions, private organizations, and community groups take part in the activity, which starts at the Pasonanca Butterfly Garden, passes through the Universidad de Zamboanga Pasonanca Campus, and culminates at the Savannah Grassland.
The activity is conducted in coordination with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Zamboanga City Office, the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) Zamboanga City, the City Administrator's Office, the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ZCDRRMO), and Barangay Pasonanca.
Leading the celebration is EMB IX Regional Director Atty. Abbas I. Lao, who emphasizes the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and building climate resilience.
During the trail plogging activity, participants collect improperly disposed waste materials scattered along the trail route and surrounding grassland areas. The initiative not only improves the cleanliness of the area but also strengthens public awareness on environmental protection and responsible waste management.
At the conclusion of the activity, volunteers collect a total of 82 sacks of mixed waste weighing 152.24 kilograms. The wastes primarily consist of community-generated litter, including single-use plastics, packaging materials, beverage containers, paper products, and residual wastes commonly found in recreational and natural areas.
All collected wastes are consolidated and turned over for proper management and disposal to prevent further environmental contamination and help preserve the area's natural ecosystem.
The successful conduct of the 4th Trail Plogging Activity is made possible through the support of Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc., KCC Mall de Zamboanga, Industrial Group of Zamboanga, Inc. (IGZI), Universidad de Zamboanga, and Zamboanga Trail Runners.
As the global community marks World Environment Day 2026, EMB IX and its partners continue to encourage individuals, organizations, and communities to take meaningful action against plastic pollution and contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
