The BFAR-Negros Island Region (BFAR-NIR) has been closely monitoring recent reports of food poisoning cases in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, linked to the consumption of Aloy and/or Tulingan.

Our technical team is currently investigating the incident. Based on preliminary reports, the symptoms are consistent with Scombroid Fish Poisoning (see comments to know more about SFP)

๐Ÿ” WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
This is not a naturally occurring toxin in the fish itself, but it happens when the fish is not properly kept chilled from the time it is caught until it reaches the market. When fish like Aloy or Tulingan are left in the heat, they produce high levels of histamine, which cannot be removed even by cooking or frying.

โš ๏ธWHAT TO DO:
โ€ข Vendors should ensure that they are selling fresh fish all the time. Kept fish in chilled (1:1 ice fish ratio) condition especially this summer season. Avoid exposure of fish to high temperatures to prevent spoilage.
โ€ข For buyers: Avoid buying/eating fish that has a metallic/peppery taste, smells pungent, or has soft, mushy flesh.

We are working hand-in-hand with the local government of Cadiz and conduct monitoring of several wet markets in the Province of Negros Occidental to ensure that our local markets are safe. Your health is our priority!

Stay informed and stay safe, mga Negrense!

Cawayan, Masbate, adtong Marso 21, human mikaon ug butete.

Matod pa sa BFAR, kining mga isdaa grabeng makahilo tungod duna kini "tetrodotoxinโ€ nga makabara sa mga ugat, ug pagkaparalisa sa mga kaunoran nga mahimong mu resulta sa kamatayon.

Base sa Fisheries Administrative Order No. 249, Series of 2014 nga gipagawas sa Department of Agriculture, hugot nga gidili ang pagbaligya ug pagkonsumo sa butete sa bisan unsang porma, presko man o naproseso, tungod sa taas niini nga lebel sa kalasรณn o toxicity.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Ormoc City has approved a Resolution No. 2025-176 authorizing the City Mayor or Acting City Mayor to enter into and sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region VIII and the Visayas State University (VSU) for the establishment of marine conservation and fisheries development facilities. The approval comes after the City Legal Office affirmed that the MOA contains no legal impediments and is fully aligned with public policy, local development goals, and national laws on fisheries protection, biodiversity conservation, and wildlife preservation.

Under the agreement, Ormoc City intends to support key projects such as a Multi-Species Hatchery, a Marine Mammal and Reptile Rehabilitation Center, and a Mariculture Park with on-shore and off-shore facilities linked to a Marine Laboratory. BFAR VIII will provide technical oversight and resources for hatchery operations, while VSU will extend scientific and research support through its Department of Biological Sciences.
