PUBLIC ADVISORY: AFRICAN SWINE FEVER (ASF) CASE IN BARANGAY ALTAVISTA
The City Veterinary Office hereby informs the public that Barangay Altavista, Ormoc City has been identified as an area affected by African Swine Fever (ASF).
In view of this development, the City Veterinary Office urges all hog raisers to REMAIN CALM AND NOT PANIC. Instead, we strongly encourage everyone to STRICTLY IMPLEMENT AND STRENGTHEN BIOSECURITY MEASURES in their respective farms and backyard swine-raising areas to prevent the entry and spread of the ASF virus. The public is likewise advised that official announcements and updates regarding ASF cases and affected areas shall be issued only through the City Veterinary Office and other duly authorized government agencies. Should any person or group circulate information claiming that a particular barangay is affected by ASF, please verify such information with the City Veterinary Office or the concerned Barangay Officials.
We also strongly remind all TRADERS, TRANSPORTERS, MIDDLEMEN, and “RANGERS” NOT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CURRENT SITUATION. We urge them to continue sourcing pigs from non-affected areas or barangays and to purchase them at fair and justifiable prices, taking into consideration the welfare of our local hog raisers.
We strongly urge all hog raisers and stakeholders to:
• Strictly implement and strengthen biosecurity measures in all commercial and backyard hog farms (please see the attached image for guidance);
• Immediately report any sick or dead pig to the City Veterinary Office or the respective Barangay Officials;
• Do not slaughter, sell, transport, or improperly dispose of sick or dead pigs without proper coordination and authorization from veterinary authorities; and
• Fully cooperate with veterinary authorities during surveillance, inspection, testing, and other ASF prevention and control activities.
Strict disease-control and biosecurity measures are essential to protect our local hog industry, contain the ASF virus, and prevent its further spread to other areas of Ormoc City.
