Follow these critical reminders before, during, and after the storm to minimize risk and ensure community resilience:
âś…Before the Typhoon Hits (Prepare Now)
A. Stay Informed: Monitor updates from official sources like PAGASA, local government units (LGU), and trusted news outlets via TV, radio, or weather apps.
B. Prepare a "Go-Bag": Assemble an emergency kit with essentials in a waterproof bag, including:
1. Water (at least 1 gallon per person per day for 3-5 days).
2. Non-perishable food and a manual can opener.
3. Medicines (prescription and basic first aid) and hygiene items.
4. Flashlights and extra batteries (avoid candles to reduce fire risk).
5. Cash and copies of important documents (IDs, insurance papers, birth certificates) sealed in plastic.
6. Battery-powered radio to receive updates in case of power outages.
7. Extra clothes and sturdy shoes.
C. Secure Your Home:
1. Trim trees and branches near your house that could fall during strong winds.
2. Bring outdoor furniture, potted plants, and other loose items inside, as they can become dangerous projectiles.
3. Clear gutters and drains to prevent flooding.
4. Consider boarding up windows with plywood or installing storm shutters.
D. Plan Evacuation:
Know the nearest designated evacuation center and the safest route to get there:
1. Mayha Child Development Center
2. Mayha Barangay Hall
3. Mayha Elementary School
4. Mayha National High School
If you live in a low-lying or flood-prone area, prepare to evacuate as soon as an order is given by authorities.
E. Charge Devices: Fully charge all mobile phones, power banks, and other electronic devices while there is still power.
F. Gas Up: Ensure vehicles have enough fuel, as gas stations may close or lose power.
âś…During the Typhoon (Stay Safe)
1. Stay Indoors
2. Avoid Windows
3. Turn Off Utilities:
4. Beware the "Eye": A sudden calm means you may be in the eye of the storm. Stay put, as violent winds will soon resume from the opposite direction.
5. Do Not Enter Floodwater
âś…After the Typhoon (Be Cautious)
1. Wait for the All-Clear: Do not leave your shelter or return home from an evacuation center until local authorities announce it is safe.
2. Check for Hazards: Be alert for fallen power lines (assume all are live), damaged structures, and gas leaks (smell for a rotten egg odor).
3. Assess Damage Safely: Inspect your home for structural damage before re-entering. Take photos of any damage for insurance purposes.
4. Ensure Water is Safe: Drink only bottled water or boil tap water vigorously for at least three minutes, as water sources may be contaminated.
5. Help Neighbors: Check on elderly or disabled neighbors and others who may need assistance.
6. Report Problems: Notify local authorities immediately about downed power lines, blocked roads, or damaged infrastructure.
