#𝗚𝗔𝗗𝘁𝗼𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 | 𝗞𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗶𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️

This Women’s Month, our : Kababaihan sa Pangisdaan series will highlight women whose leadership, expertise, and dedication continue to shape and strengthen the fisheries sector.

For our first feature, we recognize Regional Director Remia Aritalla Aparri of the DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 6, who brings nearly four decades of experience in fisheries management, research, and policy development.

Under her leadership, innovative initiatives such as the Blue Swimming Crab Adopt-A-Village Program and the Regional Inter-agency Task Force against IUU Fishing were pioneered in Western Visayas. These bring together national government agencies, industry partners, academe, local government units, and fisherfolk communities to promote sustainable fishing practices.

Her work has also gained international recognition, as she was selected as the first representative from the Philippines to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program Multi-Stakeholder Group (2024–2026).

Through her leadership in fisheries governance, sustainability initiatives, and global collaboration, Director Aparri continues to elevate the Philippines’ voice in advancing responsible and sustainable fisheries.

𝗗𝗔-𝗕𝗙𝗔𝗥 𝟲 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 ‘𝗞𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗶𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗮𝗮𝗻’ 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁

Around a hundred employees and guests gathered at the Bureau’s grounds for the celebration of National Women’s Month marked with the opening of the “Kababaihan sa Pangisdaan” Exhibit, highlighting the inspiring women from across the region.

In his opening remarks, Gender and Development Focal Point System Chair and Chief of the Fisheries Production and Support Services Division, Mr. Joel Abalayan, shared the history of Women’s Month, noting that the celebration recognizes the movement that secured women’s rights in society. He encouraged everyone to “be Babaylans,” recognizing the vital roles women have played in communities during pre-colonial times and emphasizing the importance of respect and inclusion.

Ms. Jessica Esmao, GAD Focal Point System Alternate Chair and Chief of the Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Division, presented the rationale of the celebration. She emphasized that Women’s Month is not only for women but also an opportunity for men to better understand gender equality. She also shared that the Bureau has lined up activities such as seminars on reproductive and mental health and gender-fair language.

In her message, Regional Director Remia A. Aparri noted that while fisheries has long been seen as a male-dominated field, there are around 70,000 registered fisherfolk women in Region 6. She emphasized that women play vital roles in fisheries, particularly in post-harvest work and marketing.

Through the exhibit, she underscored the importance of making women’s stories visible—their struggles, contributions, and successes—and encouraged everyone to continue serving as stewards of conservation toward sustainable fisheries.

The program ended with a closing remarks from Mr. Erwin E. Ilaya, the Chief of Fisheries Management, Regulatory and Enforcement Division as he proudly shared that our systems are already open to women, systems that are previously exclusive to men and it is a step towards our goal of gender equality.

𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗢𝗥𝗬 📢📢📢

In compliance with Office of the President Memorandum Circular No. 114, s. 2026, the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region VI (DA-BFAR 6) will implement a Four-Day Workweek Arrangement for the Regional Office and Provincial Fisheries Offices in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, and Iloilo starting March 9, 2026.

DA-BFAR 6 Offices will be closed every Friday to adopt the energy conservation protocol.

For March 9-12, 2026 only, offices will operate for four days on regular hours of 8 AM to 5 PM and will be on a work-from-home arrangement on March 13, 2026.

For the rest of March, DA-BFAR 6 will adopt a compressed work schedule of 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM (Monday to Thursday) to ensure continued delivery of services.

Offices providing essential and frontline services, including enforcement operations, technology outreach stations, and fisheries inspection and quarantine services in seaports and airports, will continue to operate on their regular schedules to ensure uninterrupted public service.

Clients and stakeholders are advised to plan their transactions accordingly.

BFAR-SAAD Western Visayas Update | 𝗣𝗮𝗙𝗙𝗔 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗸𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴

Libertad, Antique — The Pajo Fisherfolks and Farmers Association (PaFFA) developed their skills and knowledge on fishing practices through a two-day training on Lambaklad Fishing Net Repair and Maintenance on August 13-14, 2025.

The activity capacitated members with specific techniques in repairing damages and tears, allowing them to make their fishing nets more useful for a longer time and enhancing their livelihood sustainability.
