Tonglayan ES United: Community Steps Up After Typhoon Uwan

In the wake of Typhoon Uwan's destructive path, Tonglayan Elementary School sprang into action with its "Brigada Plus" initiative on November 19-20, 2025. The typhoon left behind eroded riprap, leaky roofs, and shattered windows, but the combined forces of DepEd personnel and dedicated PTA members turned adversity into action.

Volunteers worked tirelessly to relocate displaced stones near the Grade 5 and 6 classrooms and carried out restoration of the stockroom roof which had sustained significant damage. This united effort underscores the community's commitment to providing a safe and functional learning environment for its students, proving that even after nature's fury, bayanihan spirit prevails.

Tonglayan Elementary School came alive today with rhythmic dances, and traditional activities during its 2025 Indigenous Peoples Education (IPEd) Celebration, held to honor and deepen the learnersโ€™ connection to their cultural roots.

The event aimed to help students understand the deeper meaning of their heritageโ€”especially the essence of being an e-Hakkiโ€”through traditional dances, and games. PTA President Bonifacio Tariagao delivered an inspiring message, emphasizing the importance of knowing oneโ€™s origin and ancestral value. โ€œWherever our learners may go in the future, the wisdom and good practices of our ancestors should remain rooted in their hearts,โ€ he said.

Adding excitement to the program, Ms. Perlin M. Banasan energized the crowd with a porportiya, a traditional riddle-giving activity that sparked laughter and curiosity among attendees.

Each class, from Kindergarten to Grade 6 proudly presented cultural performances that showcased the unique traditions of their community.

To give everyone a refreshing break before the traditional games and other activities, snacks were served to all learners and visitors, energizing them for the exciting next part of the program. With renewed energy, the crowd eagerly gathered to take part in the upcoming activities.

Highlights included:
- Dances such as hennapor and sissiwit, performed with grace and pride
- Traditional games like sangkhor, sack race, and the ever-popular โ€œhitting the potโ€

In her closing remarks, School IPEd Coordinator, Ms. Isabel D. Ayawan reminded everyone of the enduring value of culture and the importance of preserving it through education and community involvement.

The celebration was attended by the TES faculty and staff, parents, and Barangay officials, all of whom contributed to the success of the event.

Tonglayan Elementary School successfully launched the ARAL Program with the active participation of various stakeholders including barangay officials, parents, teachers, and learners. The event highlighted the shared commitment of the community to support learners in strengthening their foundational skills and achieving academic excellence.

The program formally opened with the singing of the National Anthem conducted by Rochelle Anne Bernas, a Grade 6 learner followed by the opening prayer by the Grade 6 adviser, Mrs. Juliet O. Dicang, welcome remarks by Mrs. Isabel D. Ayawan, Grade 3 adviser.

The overview of the ARAL Program shared by Master Teacher 1 Kathleen Joy D. Ayawan, a Grade 4 adviser providing insights into its objectives and how it aims to assist learners in mastering essential competencies, followed by the presentation of the program structure by the school principal, Natividad M. Salcedo who explained the framework, schedules, and strategies to be implemented to ensure the programโ€™s effectiveness.

To emphasize the spirit of collaboration, a message of support was given by parent representative, Mr. Rayan Nayas-sang expressing gratitude to the school and community for their united effort in helping learners succeed. Master Teacher Kathleen Joy D. Ayawan then conducted a simple demonstration of an ARAL session, showcasing how the activities will be carried out to enhance the learnersโ€™ understanding in a fun and engaging way.

One of the most meaningful moments of the event was the signing of the commitment pledge by participants, which included barangay officials, parents, teachers, and learners. This symbolic act signified their dedication to work hand in hand for the success of the ARAL Program and the holistic development of the learners.

The ARAL Program Launching truly reflected the value of bayanihan in education where the community joins forces to ensure that every learner is given the support and opportunities they need to thrive.

Following the series of orientations, expressions of support, and affirmations for the ARAL Program launch, the event officially concluded with the closing remarks delivered by Mr. Bonifacio Tariagao, President of the PTA.

a poem for the two retirees:

"Golden years, a time to shine,
Free from schedules, worries left behind.
Pursue your passions, live with glee,
Retirement's gift, a chance to be free.

Relax, recharge, and take your time,
Make memories, and savor each rhyme.
You've earned it, after all your years,
Of hard work, laughter, and joyful tears.

Here's to new adventures, and sunny days,
May retirement bring you joyous ways."
