The DENR-PENRO Davao de Oro joins the world celebration of the Arbor Day on June 25, 2020 with the conduct of tree planting activities at two (2) sites. With this year’s theme, “Celebrating the 2020 National Arbor Day to Combat the Covid-19 Pandemic: Healing Mother Earth through Sustainable Forest Management”, the annual activity is centered on finding solutions to the crisis in our natural resources and the environment.
A total of forty (40) fruit tree seedlings of Durian and Lanzones species were planted by some PENRO personnel at the road side en route to the PENRO Office in Poblacion, Nabunturan. The trees are expected to augment the existing vegetation in the premises to promote greening of office spaces.
Meanwhile, in close partnership with the Tagnanan CARP Beneficiaries, Inc., an aggregate of 200 seedlings of Bakawan species were planted by the joined participation of 30 volunteers from the DENR, PO, and the community along the 200-meter coastal zone of Brgy. Tagnanan, Mabini, Davao de Oro. The planted mangrove trees serve as complementation to the effort of the locals to boost its capacity in protection from natural hazards.
In his message, OIC, PENR Officer Chamberlain J. Babiera emphasized the importance of mangroves as buffers against climate-related disasters, as filters through carbon sequestration, and as breeding grounds for fishes and other marine organisms.
