The Electron Microscopy (EM) Section was established as a core facility in the 1980s, with a primary focus on investigating the ultrastructure of a broad range of biological and inorganic s
pecimens. Some of the most notable research contributions facilitated by the EM Section include:
1.Detection of Rotavirus in diarrheic stool samples
2.Structural study of Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with HIV
3.Characterization of purified Hepatitis B virus
4.Confirmation of SARS infection
5.Confirmation of hairy cell leukemia
Throughout its operation, the EM Section has also supported numerous studies involving bacteriophages and nanoparticles, collaborating with academic institutions to advance scientific knowledge and innovation. The Electron Microscopy Section of the Department of Pathology, under the Laboratory Research Division of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) - Department of Health, has recently procured a state-of-the-art Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) through the HEAL Project, funded by the Asian Development Bank. This acquisition marks a pivotal advancement in diagnostic technology for the Philippines, as the first of its kind in the country and among the few available in Southeast Asia. This cutting-edge technology significantly bolsters the nation’s capacity for disease surveillance, research, and prevention, reinforcing public health initiatives and supporting the country's broader efforts in enhancing diagnostic precision and research capabilities.
