ICYMI: Hands-On Training on Seedling Pulling and Transplanting at CLSU-CHRRIM

As part of the CLSU-CHRRIM On-Site Season-Long Training on AxR M38 Hybrid Rice Seed Production and Certification 2026, participants took part in a hands-on activity on seedling pulling and transplanting last July 21, 2026, gaining practical knowledge on one of the important steps in hybrid rice seed production.

Mr. Francis E. Mina served as the resource person, providing technical guidance and explaining the proper steps in pulling healthy seedlings and transplanting them in the field. With the assistance of the farm workers, the proper techniques were applied, allowing participants to observe and apply the recommended practices.

These activities helped participants to understand the importance of proper seedling handling and transplanting methods in achieving high yield. Through actual field practice, trainees further developed their skills and gained knowledge in crop establishment of hybrid rice seed production.

OSLT 2026 Strengthens Farmers’ Skills in Hybrid Rice Seed Production

The CLSU-CHRRIM On-Site Season-Long Training (OSLT) on AxR M38 Hybrid Rice Seed Production and Certification 2026, co-facilitated by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI)-Central Luzon, continues to equip farmers and agricultural practitioners with the knowledge and practical skills needed for hybrid rice seed production. Held from July 14–16, 2026, the training featured lectures and hands-on activities, including seedbed preparation, seed incubation, broadcasting of A line seeds, and installation of nylon nets under the supervision of Mr. Francis E. Mina, with technical guidance from Ms. Leila S. Baldedara and support from CLSU-CHRRIM farm workers and intern students.

Participants also attended lectures on the jointly-bred M38 hybrid rice variety by Mr. Erickson C. Frediles and Mr. Francis E. Mina, as well as a session on major rice insect pests by Mr. Val C. Garcia. Ms. Giselle Ann Geronimo represented ATI-Central Luzon, reaffirming the Institute’s commitment to strengthening farmer capacity through agricultural extension and training.

Moreover, the training was further enriched by experts from the DA-BPI National Seed Quality Control Services (NSQCS) Region III. Ms. Reshel J. Deytiquez discussed the Policies and Mechanics of Seed Certification, Mr. Phillip S. Abenir presented Seed Bagging, Piling, Sampling and Tagging, Ms. Maricar F. Alvarado lectured on Seed Testing, and Mr. Leonilo V. Gramaje from DA-PhilRice shared the Status of the Rice Seed Industry in Central Luzon. Through the integration of classroom instruction and practical field experience, CLSU-CHRRIM and its partner institutions continue to develop competent hybrid rice seed growers, supporting the commercialization of the jointly-bred M38 hybrid rice variety and promoting sustainable rice production in Central Luzon.

The Center for Hybrid Rice Research, Innovation, and Mechanization (CHRRIM) of Central Luzon State University officially launched and commenced the CLSU-CHRRIM On-Site Season-Long Training on AxR M38 Hybrid Rice Seed Production and Certification 2026 on July 13, 2026, bringing together participants from the Science City of Muñoz LGU and farmers from various barangays of Muñoz.

Implemented in collaboration with DA-PhilRice, DA-BPI National Seed Quality Control Services (NSQCS) Region III, DA Agricultural Training Institute (ATI)-Central Luzon, CLSU Research, Innovation, and Extension, and DA Regional Field Office III, the season-long training will run from July to November 2026. The program aims to develop participants into hybrid rice seed growers equipped with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience in hybrid rice seed production. More importantly, the training supports the commercialization of Mestiso 38 (NSIC 2011 Rc262H) (AxR M38) hybrid rice in Central Luzon by establishing a pool of competent and certified seed growers who will help ensure a sustainable supply of quality hybrid rice seeds in the region.

The opening session featured Mr. Leonilo V. Gramaje, Senior Science Research Specialist from DA-PhilRice, who provided a comprehensive discussion on the Overview of Hybrid Rice Technology and the Basic Concepts of Hybrid Rice. This was followed by lectures from Mr. Erickson Frediles and Mr. Francis E. Mina, who discussed the AxR and AxB Hybrid Rice Seed Production Protocols. Participants also gained valuable hands-on experience through the soaking and sowing of A-line seeds, marking the beginning of their practical learning journey in hybrid rice seed production.

The activity was graced by Dr. Marvin M. Cinense, Director of CHRRIM, who delivered the Opening Remarks, and Dr. Emmanuel M. Vera Cruz, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension, who welcomed the participants and delivered an inspiring message highlighting the importance of innovation, collaboration, and capacity building in advancing the country’s hybrid rice industry.

Also present during the opening program were Ms. Leila S. Baldedara, Project Leader; project staff Dr. Jerwin R. Undan, Ms. Monique V. Corpuz, Mr. Francis E. Mina, Mr. Carl Dionelle B. Ponce and Mr. Val C. Garcia, who also served as Masters of Ceremony; and Mr. Frodie P. Waing, Project Leader from DA-PhilRice.

Through this collaborative initiative, CLSU-CHRRIM and its partner institutions reaffirm their commitment to strengthening the Philippine rice industry by empowering farmers with science-based technologies, producing competent hybrid rice seed growers, and accelerating the commercialization and adoption of M38 across Central Luzon.

𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐨𝐰 | 𝐌𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐒: 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐧𝐚, 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐚!
