𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗚, 𝗕𝗨𝗞𝗜𝗗𝗡𝗢𝗡 — The Department of Agriculture–Livestock Biotechnology Center (DA-LBC), together with Central Mindanao University (CMU) through its College of Veterinary Medicine and the Philippine Carabao Center at CMU, successfully concluded the 2nd Regional Livestock Biotechnology Symposium and Technology Exhibit on August 19–20, 2026, at the University Convention Center in Maramag, Bukidnon.

Anchored on the theme "Gawang Pinoy, Tatak Biotek: Pagsulong sa Masaganang Industriya ng Paghahayupan," the two-day symposium convened scientists, industry leaders, academics, and local livestock raisers to discuss how biotechnology can enhance agricultural productivity and safeguard rural livelihoods.

The symposium opened with welcome remarks from Hon. Rogelio Neil P. Roque, Governor of the Province of Bukidnon; Atty. Jose Joel P. Doromal, Municipality Mayor of Maramag; Dr. Maria Estela B. Detalla, Consortium Director of NOMCAARRD; and Dr. Rolito G. Eballe, President of CMU.

This was followed by an opening messages from Dr. Marvin A. Villanueva, Center Chief of the DA-LBC; Dr. Edwin C. Atabay, Deputy Executive Director of the DA–Philippine Carabao Center; Dr. Paul C. Limson, Program Director of the DA–Biotech Program Office; and Dr. Benjamin C. Albarece, DA Assistant Secretary for Ruminant Livestock. The keynote address was delivered by Atty. Asis G. Perez, DA Undersecretary for Policy, Planning, and Regulations.

The program proceeded with four plenary sessions. The first, Biosecurity and the Regulatory Frontier, examined regulatory approaches for GMO and gene-edited livestock, as well as the epidemiology, economic impact, and control of Surra. The second, Feed Technology and Ingredient Valorization, presented the forage and phyto-veterinary resources of Mindanao and locally isolated probiotics for crossbred dairy goats. The third, Genetic Improvement for Breed Superiority, discussed the National Livestock Cryobank and assisted reproduction in dairy cattle. The fourth, Farmer Champions of Livestock Biotechnology, featured livestock raisers who presented their experiences in adopting biotechnology in their respective farm operations.

Held concurrently with the plenary sessions, the Gawang Pinoy, Tatak Biotek Technology and Artwork Exhibit presented developed innovations and provided a venue for technology generators to engage with students, participants, and prospective partners toward wider adoption and commercialization.

Closing remarks were delivered by Dr. Winson M. Gutierrez, Center Director of PCC at CMU.

This event was organized in support of the 22nd National Biotechnology Week, the annual observance of how biotechnology advances innovation across agriculture, health, the environment, education, and industry.
