The second part was preceded by a showcase of UPV talent as CM students Luis Rabut and Nanzrine Balsamo serenaded the crowd with acoustic music. The power couple, Dr. Rey Carlo Gonzales and Asst. Prof. Julie Prescott, served as moderators during the Panel Discussion that highlighted university student support services and student policies.

Among the panel discussants who concisely addressed the queries of both students and parents during the Open Forum were Prof. Nathaniel G. Samson, OSA Director, Prof. Kezzie Lyn B. Hilado from the Office of Gender and Development Program, Prof. Bernice Vania L. Mamauag from the Office for Anti-Sexual Harassment, Dr. Riza Subade from the Health and Services Unit (HSU), and Atty. Scarlette Joy N. Coopera-Castillon from the Legal Unit under the Office of the Chancellor, who reiterated the University’s Anti-Hazing Policy.

A new PIDS Discussion Paper finds that sexual minority adolescents have higher odds of domestic violence and bullying than their heterosexual peers. The study also identifies differences in risk associated with gender expression and calls attention to the need for inclusive child protection and antibullying policies.

The UPV Division of Social Sciences opens the new academic year with its “Dayon. Padayon. 2026. Division of Social Sciences Opening Program and Student Orientation” held last 17 August 2026 at the CFOS AV Hall, UPV Miagao Campus. The event was hosted by Assistant Professor Antoinette Louise S. Makani of the Sociology Cluster.
Prof. Moniq Muyargas, Chair of the Division, welcomed the incoming and returning students from the six different programs of the Division: BA (Community Development), BA (History), BA (Sociology), BA Political Science, BA Psychology, and BS Economics. In her opening remarks, she reminded freshmen to ‘be kind, be humble’ and be intentional in acquiring knowledge while in the University. She then presented the Division’s institutional background and core guiding values, the academic staff of each program cluster, and the support staff handling the day-to-day operations.

The second part of the program was an orientation on anti-sexual harassment orientation by Asst. Professor Thania Margarrette Coronica, Coordinator of the UPV Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment. She reiterated the University’s commitment in fostering a safe, healthy, and gender fair learning environment. She reminded students to be active and mindful, to speak up on matters concerning sexual harassment.
Between sessions, students participated in a Division trivia game, with the Community Development and Psychology programs emerging victorious.

The program ended with the singing of UP Naming Mahal. Breakout sessions of each program followed in assigned rooms in campus.

The findings show that women, girls, children, and other vulnerable groups continue to face serious risks online. They also point to the need for stronger reporting mechanisms, survivor support, digital safety measures, and better enforcement of existing laws.

As we commemorate the passage of Republic Act No. 9710, or the Magna Carta of Women, we are reminded that protecting women’s rights must also mean addressing violence that happens through technology.

THE MID-YEAR TFGBV REPORT OF FMA IS NOW UP!

The Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) presents its Mid-Year Report on Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) in the Philippines, covering January to June 2026.

The report looks at documented cases involving online sexual exploitation of children (OSAEC), image-based sexual abuse, sextortion, cyber harassment, trafficking-related offenses, and other forms of technology-enabled violence. It also highlights case trends, common manifestations, survivor and perpetrator profiles, legal pathways, and emerging concerns.

The findings show that women, girls, children, and other vulnerable groups continue to face serious risks online. They also point to the need for stronger reporting mechanisms, survivor support, digital safety measures, and better enforcement of existing laws.

Ngayong araw, Agosto 14, ating ginugunita ang paglagda sa makasaysayang Republic Act No. 9710 o ang Magna Carta of Women. Ang batas na ito ang komprehensibong batas sa ating bansa na kumikilala, nagtatanggol, at nagtataguyod ng mga karapatan ng kababaihan.

Ito rin ang lokal na pagsasabatas ng mga probisyon ng Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), partikular sa pagbibigay-kahulugan sa gender discrimination, state obligations, substantive equality, at temporary special measures.

Maging ang paggamit ng salitang “of” sa pangalan nito ay kinikilala ang women's participation and ownership of the bill.

Labing-pitong taon ng pagsusulong ng karapatang pantao ng bawat kababaihang Pilipino. Sama-sama tayo para sa mas maunlad, mas ligtas, mas malaya, at mas inklusibong Pilipinas. 💜
