Let us honor our oceans by doing our part: stop IUU fishing, protect our coral reefs and coastal habitats, keep our coastlines clean, and sustain our oceans' health. Our oceans do not need saving - they need respecting.

BFAR Uno also salutes our hardworking fisherfolk who guard and protect our oceans. Mabuhay po kayo!

Fisheries extension workers and Bantay Dagat personnel must not only be mentally prepared but also physically equipped to respond effectively during emergencies, especially at sea.

With this in mind, the BFAR-Region 1, through the Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Division (RFTFCD), conducted the Basic Safety at Sea Training on June 2โ€“4, 2026 at the BFAR National Fisheries Development Center (NFDC) in Bonuan-Binloc, Dagupan City, Pangasinan. The training aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills on maritime safety, emergency preparedness, and lifesaving procedures.

The activity began with discussions on Fisheries Extension Services, Values Enhancement, and Gender and Development, facilitated by BFAR personnel. These were followed by sessions on Basic Life Support (BLS) and Water Search and Rescue (WASAR) conducted by personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard โ€“ Coast Guard District Northwestern Luzon (CGDNWLZN). Participants also took part in actual and return demonstrations of BLS techniques, as well as practical exercises on water safety, rescue procedures, and emergency response, all designed to enhance their readiness during maritime emergencies. The training also stressed to the participants that they should share what they learned in order to save lives during emergencies at sea or on the shore. Consistent and proactive practice is key, as the life they save may even be their own.

The Philippine Coast Guard served as learning service providers, namely LTJG Alford John T. Gutierrez, PCG; Apprentice Seaman Pablo Resano Jr.; Chief Petty Officer Christopher Lagmay; Seaman Second Class Cherbin D. Gumarad; and Seaman Second Class Rogelio De Castro, for sharing their expertise and contributing to the success of the training. Chief-RFTFCD Atty. Girly G. Dela Peรฑa extended BFAR Region I's appreciation to the PCG stating that "You have taught that safety is not about luck - it is about skill, habits, and systems. And the participants learned this clearly".

The activity forms part of BFAR Region 1's continuing efforts to strengthen the capacity of fisheries extension workers and coastal law enforcement volunteers, ensuring safer and more resilient fishing communities throughout the region.

๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐Š: Thirteen (13) Bachelor of Science in Fisheries students from Central Luzon State University (CLSU) and Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU) successfully completed their 240-hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) at the BFAR Regional Mariculture Technology Demonstration Center (RMaTDeC) in Lucap, Alaminos City, Pangasinan.

The trainees participated in a comprehensive training program that combined lectures, orientations, and hands-on activities aimed at enhancing their knowledge and practical skills in fisheries and aquaculture.

Throughout the program, the students gained valuable exposure to various facilities of the center, including the Marine Biotoxin Laboratory, Seaweed Culture Laboratory, Natural Food Production Facility, and marine finfish and invertebrate production units. They also acquired practical experience in the breeding, hatchery operations, and culture management of marine aquatic species such as abalone, sea cucumber, sea urchin, oyster, milkfish, and siganid. In addition, the trainees were introduced to broodstock management practices at the Hundred Islands Satellite Station.

The OJT concluded with a written examination and presentation of the traineesโ€™ accomplishments, insights, and key learnings acquired.

Through initiatives such as the OJT program, BFAR continues to bridge academic instruction and industry practice, equipping future fisheries professionals with the technical competencies, discipline, and experience needed to contribute to the sustainable development of the Philippine fisheries sector.

Congratulations to the OJT completers from CLSU and PSAU for reaching this significant milestone and taking another step toward becoming the next generation of fisheries and aquaculture professionals.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 1 joined the 9th LAYAG Awards: Honoring Excellence in the Field of Aquatic Sciences on June 4, 2026, at the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) Student Center in Batac City, Ilocos Norte, celebrating the achievements of Fisheries Scholarship Program (FSP) scholars and their journey toward becoming future fisheries professionals.

Held annually by the MMSUโ€“College of Aquatic Sciences and Applied Technology (CASAT), the event recognized students who have demonstrated academic excellence, perseverance, and commitment to the field of fisheries and aquatic sciences.

Among the BFAR-FSP scholars honored during the ceremony were Marianne A. Agramon and Jeslyn M. Galzote under the Fisherfolk Children Educational Grant (FCEG), and Angelica D. Agresor under the Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICC/IP) scholarship category.

As a simple gesture of appreciation, BFAR Region 1 awarded the scholars graduation assistance worth โ‚ฑ1,500, along with certificates of recognition, tokens, and commemorative cakes.

BFAR Region 1 Regional Director Remely B. Lachica, DPA, also extended her gratitude to MMSU-CASAT, headed by Officer-in-Charge Dean Prof. Carolyn V. Pascual, for its unwavering support in implementing the BFAR Fisheries Scholarship Program and for continuously providing quality education, mentorship, and opportunities for aspiring fisheries professionals.

โ€œLike a sail that moves forward despite strong winds and challenging waves, our BFAR scholars embody courage, perseverance, and hope. May you always remember that being a scholar is both a privilege and a responsibility โ€” you are not only achievers of today, but future leaders, innovators, and guardians of our aquatic resources who will help steer the fisheries sector toward a more sustainable and progressive future,โ€ Director Lachica shared in her message.

She further emphasized that the strong partnership between BFAR Region 1 and MMSU continues to transform lives through education, opening doors for deserving students while helping build a skilled and resilient fisheries workforce.

The recognition of these scholars reflects the shared commitment of BFAR Region 1 and MMSU-CASAT to empower young individuals through education and inspire them to contribute to the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

Congratulations to our BFAR scholars! Continue to sail toward excellence and inspire others through dedication and service.

Mabuhay ang mga Iskolar ng Pangisdaan! Mabuhay ang BFAR-FSP!
