The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) invites all Filipinos to join the nationwide celebration of the 2025 Indigenous Peoplesโ Month and the 28th Indigenous Peoples Rights Act Commemoration.
With the theme, "Weaving Culture, Enriching Future: Empowering Indigenous Communities as Bedrock of Sustainable Development," this year's celebration spotlights Indigenous Knowledge, Systems, and Practices (IKSPs) as proven and practical guides to sustainable development.
โThis annual observance is also a call to action for the continuous support of the indigenous livelihoods, safeguarding their ancestral lands, and to recognize their vital role in environmental stewardship and cultural continuity,โ said NCIP Chairperson Dr. Marie Grace T. Pascua.
The month-long celebration will celebrate not only the ICCs/IPs but also their continuing legacy of crafting solutions rooted in tradition to shape the future. By honoring their past and empowering them, the NCIP aims to promote Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) not merely as stewards of the environment but as invaluable partners in progress and nation-building.
The NCIP, partnering with national government agencies and stakeholders, will host various activities nationwide to celebrate the ICCs/IPs in the Philippines and their rich heritage.
Educational institutions, local government units, civil society organizations, and the private sector are encouraged to organize activities that highlight the relevance of IKSPs in achieving sustainable development goals.
Under Republic Act No. 8371 or the Indigenous Peoplesโ Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997, the NCIP is the leading government agency responsible for the formulation and implementation of policies, plans, and programs to protect and promote the rights and well-being of ICCs/IPs.
