103RD INFANTRY (HARIBON) BRIGADE COMMEMORATES THE 9TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARAWI CRISIS THROUGH FLAG RAISING CEREMONY AND HOLY MASS

Kampo Ranao, Marawi City | 23 May 2026 — In solemn remembrance of one of the most defining moments in the history of Mindanao, the 103rd Infantry (HARIBON) Brigade conduct a Flag Raising Ceremony and Holy Mass at the Headquarters, 103rd Infantry (HARIBON) Brigade, Kampo Ranao, Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, in commemoration of the 9th Anniversary of the Marawi Crisis.

The commemoration honors the sacrifices, courage, and unwavering commitment demonstrated during the Marawi siege that began on 23 May 2017, when extremist elements launched coordinated attacks that disrupted peace and security in Marawi City. The conflict lasted for five (5) months and left deep scars on communities, claiming lives and displacing thousands of families. Despite the devastation, the battle also became a testament to the courage, unity, and resilience of the Filipino people in overcoming violent extremism and restoring peace.

The activity commenced with a solemn Flag Raising Ceremony, marking the 9th Commemoration of the Marawi Crisis and serving as a tribute to the heroism, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication of the soldiers, policemen, and other law enforcement personnel who defended Marawi. The ceremony reaffirmed patriotism, national solidarity, and the enduring commitment of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and its peace and security partners to preserve the hard-earned gains of peace and stability achieved through sacrifice, unity, and collective action, while renewing the shared resolve to prevent the resurgence of violent extremism and sustain lasting peace in Lanao del Sur.

A significant highlight of this year’s commemoration is the Holy Mass, which serves as a solemn act of prayer, remembrance, and tribute in honor of the 168 soldiers, policemen, law enforcement officers, and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Marawi Crisis. Celebrated before the Heroes Wall, the Holy Mass stands as a sacred moment of reflection and thanksgiving, symbolizing the Brigade’s enduring respect, gratitude, and recognition of their heroism, selfless service, and unwavering dedication in defending the sovereignty of the nation and protecting the people of Marawi. Through this religious observance, prayers are also offered for the eternal repose of the fallen heroes, continued healing of affected communities, and the preservation of lasting peace, unity, and resilience in Marawi and throughout Lanao del Sur.

The Holy Mass will also offer prayers for the eternal repose of the fallen heroes, continued healing and recovery of affected communities, strength for the families they left behind, and lasting peace throughout Marawi City and the Province of Lanao del Sur. Beyond remembrance, the religious observance serves as a renewed call for unity, resilience, and collective vigilance against terrorism, violent extremism, and radicalization.

LTC CORTEZ, Brigade Executive Officer, delivered the message on behalf of BGEN BILLY O DELA ROSA PA, Brigade Commander, 103rd Infantry (HARIBON) Brigade, emphasizing the importance of remembering the sacrifices made during the Marawi Crisis and sustaining the gains of peace and security.

“As we commemorate the 9th Anniversary of the Marawi Crisis, we offer our prayers and deepest respect to the 168 brave soldiers, policemen, and law enforcement officers who gave their lives in defense of our people and our nation. Through this Holy Mass and Flag Raising Ceremony, we honor their courage, preserve their legacy, and reaffirm our commitment to continue the mission they fought for—to protect peace, strengthen communities, and ensure that the tragedy of Marawi shall never happen again.”

The 103rd Infantry (HARIBON) Brigade remains steadfast in working alongside government agencies, local government units, religious leaders, and peace stakeholders in sustaining peace, strengthening community resilience, and advancing lasting security and development throughout Lanao del Sur.
