This is the San Remigio Sports Complex and Evacuation Center in San Remigio, Cebu during construction in 2022.

Last night, parts of the structure collapsed during a basketball tournament when a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Medellin in northern Cebu province.

Fatalities were reported in the collapsed sports complex.

This sports complex doubles as an evacuation center. Its design, in theory, should be able to withstand natural calamities, including earthquakes given that it serves as an evacuation center during disasters. The sports complex is a three year-old structure.

Reports are also filtering in that it’s difficult to reach Medellin due to the collapse of several bridges,

In light of the corruption scandals engulfing our country’s infrastructure, it’s worth reminding ourselves that the Philippines sits on both a typhoon and earthquake hotspot and we can’t afford “underdesigned” public buildings, bridges, and flood control projects. Because corruption costs lives.

Pray for Cebu and pray for our country.
