The American Corner Marawi recently hosted an AC Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Camp on "Community Journalism: Basic Principles for Effective Storytelling," a two-day program (December 20-21, 2025) designed to strengthen studentsโ€™ storytelling skills and promote ethical, community-centered journalism. The participants were students from Marawi City National High School, eager to learn the fundamentals of responsible reporting and impactful storytelling.

๐Ÿ“Œ Day 1 Highlights

The morning session featured Maโ€™am Jay-Ann Maranda, a faculty member of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, MSUโ€“College of Social Sciences and Humanities, who delivered a lecture on โ€œFeature Writing and the Ethical Standards of a Good Journalist.โ€ This was followed by a hands-on workshop on โ€œWriting a Lead for Feature Writing.โ€

In the afternoon, Maโ€™am Nur-Saleha D. Dadayan, also a faculty member of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, MSUโ€“College of Social Sciences, shared practical insights on โ€œTips for Effective Writing in Community Journalism.โ€ Her session included an interactive workshop that allowed students to apply their learning and refine their writing skills.

๐Ÿ“Œ Day 2 Highlights

The second day was fully dedicated to completing the online course via YSEALI Learns, with students engaging in video lessons guided by facilitators. In the afternoon, they participated in a reflection and sharing session, discussing their key takeaways from the two-day camp. The program concluded with the distribution of certificates, recognizing the studentsโ€™ active participation and commitment to learning.

This MOOC Camp highlighted the power of storytelling to amplify community voices, promote ethical journalism, and foster informed, engaged communities.

We sincerely thank Dr. Abdul Mahed Romato, Division English and Campus Journalism Supervisor, for accompanying the student participants and sharing his valuable time with us, and MCNHS Principal, Maโ€™am Paramata B. Bantuas, Ph.D., for allowing her students to participate in this meaningful program.

And also a heartfelt thank you to all the speakers, facilitators, organizers, and participants who made this event a success. Special appreciation goes to the Communication and Media Studies Department for their continued support of American Corner Marawiโ€”cheers to more collaborations in the future!

On December 17, 2025, College students from the MSU - Department of Library and Information Science and high school students from MSUโ€“Integrated Laboratory School came together for a meaningful and inspiring event entitled โ€œPeace Within: Foundations of the Third Siderโ€ centered on the theme: โ€œUnderstanding Self, Identity, and the Role of Youth as Peace Advocates.โ€

This program was made possible through the collaboration of American Corner-Marawi, the University Library, MSU-Main, the MSU-Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM), the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), and PeaceCoRe.

The day opened with Atty. Sittie Rahan Jhan B. Ganda, JD, MPA of the NCMF, who shared valuable insights on peace and self-identity, peace and community building, and basic mediation through the lens of the Third Sider. This was followed by an engaging workshop on perspective-taking, active listening, and effective messaging.

In the afternoon, Dr. Aliah Pacalna Cali-Pascan, JD, Sh.L., Peace Action Officer at the MSU-Institute on Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM), discussed conflict realities in Mindanao and highlighted the vital role of youth as peace catalysts. This was complemented by a lecture-workshop led by Prof. Khayronesah P. Abbas, MPA, PhD, Associate Officer for Peace Action at MSU-IPDM, who explored Islamic Values for Peace Leadership, focusing on Wasatiyyah (Moderation), Hikmah (Wisdom), Sabr (Patience), and Shura (Consultation).

The program concluded with students pledging and signing their peace commitments, affirming their role in fostering harmony within their communities.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to all the speakers, organizers, partners, facilitators, volunteers, and participants who worked tirelessly to make this event a success. Special thanks as well to our emcee, Maam Louie H. Solaiman whose professionalism and energy helped guide the program seamlessly. Together, we continue to nurture a culture of peace led by informed and empowered youth.

๐Ÿ“šโœจ eLibraryUSA Session with Library & Information Science Students! โœจ๐Ÿ“š

On December 1, 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting students from the MSU - Department of Library and Information Science of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities for an engaging eLibraryUSA session!

Accompanied by their instructor, Professor Hasmin Abdulhalim, the students explored a wide range of digital resources via eLibraryUSA and also checked out other available materials in the American Corner-Marawi. Even a brief electricity outage didnโ€™t stop their curiosityโ€”they continued exploring and making the most of the session! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“–

It was inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and dedication of future library professionals as they discovered new ways to access and share knowledge.
