๐Ÿ“Provincial Waste Management Board Convenes for 1st Quarter Meeting 2026

The Provincial Solid Waste Management Board (PSWMB) officially convened today, at the Social Hall, New Capitol Complex for its 1st Quarter Meeting. Presided over by PENRO Pili M. Papandayan, the session served as a high-level forum to synchronize local efforts with provincial sustainability mandates.

A major highlight featured Ms. Raimah Macapundang, Chief of Staff of LGU Pualas, who unveiled the LGU Pualas 10-Year Solid Waste Roadmap. This strategic blueprint establishes a decade-long benchmark for municipal waste infrastructure and ecological preservation across the province.

The Board also conducted a rigorous review of waste segregation at source, addressing barangay-level implementation gaps. To ensure these policies resonate on the ground, Mr. Jalainie M. Ala, IT Officer I, led a specialized discussion on Solid Waste Management Information, Education, and Communication (IEC). This initiative focuses on the implementation of stronger, data-driven IEC efforts at the ground level, ensuring that LGUs have the tools to ignite public participation and institutional accountability.

Furthering the agenda, the Board prioritized strengthening coordination and capacity building, ensuring the PSWMB provides the necessary technical expertise for LGUs to succeed in their environmental targets. As the session concluded, the focus shifted toward upcoming Environmental Month initiatives, cementing Lanao del Surโ€™s proactive stance in the fight for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.

๐Ÿ“Œ PENRO Collaborates with UP Diliman to Advance Research on Lake Lanao's Endemic Species Conservation

QUEZON CITY โ€” In a major step toward preserving the Lake Lanao, Forester Pili M. Papandayan, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO), visited the University of the Philippines Diliman today, March 2, 2026, for a briefing on the conservation of Lake Lanaoโ€™s unique biodiversity.

The meeting was with Dr. Ambrocio Melvin Matias of the UP Institute of Biology, and it focused on the latest findings from a specialized research program entitled, "S&T Intervention Towards Conservation and Management of the Endemic Cyprinids of Lake Lanao." Lake Lanao is renowned as one of the few ancient lakes on Earth, historically home to 18 species of endemic cyprinids (freshwater fish) found nowhere else. However, recent decades have seen these species pushed to the brink of extinction due to invasive species and environmental changes.

Dr. Matias presented initial data from "Project 4" of the program. This project has been implemented in close coordination with the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) of Lanao del Sur under the leadership of Governor Mamintal Adiong, Jr., and Vice Governor Mohammad Khalid โ€œMujamโ€ Raki-in Adiong.

The meeting serves as a vital venue to identify priority areas, and set directions for future collaborative initiatives between the academe and the provincial government, highlighting the importance of data collection, policy interventions, and capacity-building of the staff of the PENRO.

The discussions today are part of a broader roadmap for 2026. Following this initial briefing, a more intensive follow-up session is on the line. The ultimate goal of these meetings is to produce joint project proposals that will secure the future of Lake Lanao. These initiatives are expected to extend beyond biology, focusing on the "meaningful impacts" on the local communities that rely on the lake for their livelihoods and culture.

By bridging the gap between Manila-based scientists and Lanao-based foresters, the province aims to implement scientific and technological interventions that are both culturally sensitive and ecologically sound.

Completed our Urban Greening Program and Solid Waste Management IEC at Sultan Mangalampa Daing National High School on February 11, 2026, marking the culmination of our efforts across 10 schools in Lanao del Sur.

This initiative underscores our commitment to empowering communities through education and action for a cleaner, greener Lanao del Sur, in line with the environmental initiatives of Gov. Mamintal Adiong Jr. and Vice Gov. Mohammad Khalid Adiong. Our gratitude goes to Principal Ma'am Norcaya Dilangkatun Daing, Sir Aladin Abdullah, Sir Jamil O. Bilao, and Forester Sohair Maronsing from MAFAR for their support.

We thank Forester Johary Abdullah for sharing his expertise on environment awareness and Forester Ashpea R. Ambor for discussing proper solid waste disposal.

The students of Sultan Mangalampa Daing NHS actively engaged in the lectures and impressively debated on the importance of sustainable practices, demonstrating their grasp of the lessons. The PENRO team is pleased to see the students' understanding and enthusiasm, reinforcing our efforts to instill environmental values.

We commend PENRO head For. Pili M. Papandayan and the dedicated PENRO personnel for their tireless efforts. Let's keep Lanao del Sur green! ๐ŸŒณ

๐…๐ž๐›๐ซ๐ฎ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽโ€”the Andong National High School of the Municipality of Lumbatan did not disappoint in giving so much energy, will and preparation for environmental initiatives brought by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of Lanao Del Sur as headed by Forester Pili Papandayan.

Coming to its close for this round, PENRO conducts its ninth Urban Greening and Solid Waste Management IEC as supported by the Provincial Governor Mamintal โ€œBombitโ€ Adiong and Vice Governor Mohammad Khalid โ€œMujamโ€ Adiong.

The school welcomed the team from the provincial capitol with over 200 participating students. They were nothing short of loud, jolly and intelligent. Students and officials successfully answered questions from the first lecturer of PENRO, Forester Johary Abdullah. Forester Abdullah discussed the importance of caring for the environment and the proper planting of ornamental species provided for the said school from the provincial government.

Forester Ashpea Ambor, the Supervising EMS, meticulously inculcated the proper behavior of throwing individual and school community wastes. She further demonstrated the different process of handling wastes such as 3Rs, 5Rs, and the proper waste segregation. She magnified the role of young people and schools in progressing their communities by starting within oneโ€™s wastes and environmental principles.

Lastly, EMS Raheemah Hafsah Pangarungan, CPA facilitated the activities after the discussions with the rest of the PENRO Team. The students beamed with smiles as they see in actual fun games the practice of the values taught by the PENRO Team.

One activity is the Red light, Green light from the famous Squid Game series. The adaptation is relevant to the environment by making use of lyrics change among others, โ€œiplubad tano sa basura!โ€

Integrating these knowledge into the squid game and race games, the PENRO proved that caring for the environment can be FUN and MEANINGFUL.

Turnover of the ornamental species of plants and labeled trash bins followed. The over all activity is also directed by Senior EMS Forester Sittie Rachmella Alonto.

The PENRO Team thanks the Andong National High School team for the grand welcome and participation under the stewardship of Principal Junaida Undac-Derico, PhD, the rest of the Schoolโ€™s members, and the MENRO officer of the Muncipality of Lumbatan.

Of course, the expression of gratitude will not end without thanking the volunteers of PENRO, especially to coordinator Forester Farhanie Papandayan, for their long and successful services to the office and their fellow people of the Lake.
