𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗡 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗧| 2022 PLGU Benguet and SDO Benguet Outstanding Teacher
Melecia M. Miclay is one of the Grade VI advisers at Marivic Elementary School. She is one of the ICT Coordinators and the coordinator of the School-Based Management (SBM). She was consistently given the prestigious award of being the Best Teacher in school for the last three years.
As the SBM Coordinator, she assisted other teachers in the consolidation of MOVs in their assigned SBM tasks and saw to it that all other documents need were complete. Marivic ES was validated by the Division Task Force on Feb. 8, 2022 as Level 2 with a score of 2.23. Its cluster school Guiweng ES and Camanpaguey ES benchmarked here at Marivic ES and eventually awarded also as Level 2 months later.
As one of the school's ICT Coordinator, she assisted most of the teachers who were not adept on the use of technology during the pandemic. She downloaded modules for them to use. She coordinated the Learning Delivery Modalities Course conceptualized by the National Educators Academy of the Philippines. The main delivery of this course was the implementation of the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (LCP), to put into motion the marching orders of the Department: ensure that learning continues while guaranteeing the health, safety and well-being of all learners and teachers during the pandemic-ridden times. The course ensured that quality instruction be provided in the new learning set-up for its target objectives and included files and lessons that helped teachers cope with the different learning modalities.
The time of pandemic posed challenges as most of the teachers at Marivic ES were not ICT literate and did not have any laptop or high tech cellphones, only keypad cellphones that were only used for texting and calling. With the dire needs of these gadgets, the school slowly purchased laptops for those who did not have one. Teaches were able to buy their touch screen cellphones that have better applications.
She also coordinated the School INSET for Teachers on Learning Management System (LMS) where all teachers were trained on the use of asynchronous learning through the LMS by experts from Lepanto NHS. This was to cater the needs of learners who can use their gadgets to enhance their modular learning. There were some learners from Grades 4-6 who adopted this type of blended learning and most of those who used the LMS got the highest learning environment.
Ms. Micklay managed the data on quarterly assessment results, collecting data from all the teachers and consolidating it for final submission. This included the number of learners who were under Beginning, Developing, Approaching Proficiency, Proficient and Advanced in all subjects in every grade level; list of three mastered learning competencies per learning area and per grade; and the reflection on the conduct of assessment.
Modular and Blended learning has been a way for learners to learn and catch-up with the academic year since the pandemic started. Nevertheless, with the issuance of DepEd Memorandum No. 07, s. 2021 otherwise known as Preparations for the Pilot Face-to-Face, Expansion and Transitioning to the New Normal, instructed schools to conduct self-assessment using the School Safety Assessment Toll (SSAT) to assess their readiness for face-to-face classes. Through the leadership of the school head and the collaborative efforts of internal and external stakeholders.
The preparations for limited face-to-face classes were done systematically. Ms. Micklay took the lead in the preparation of all the Covid 19 Emergency hotlines which were posted in all conspicuous areas. She made the New Normal Classroom Rules with pictures for the learners to easily follow and were posted in all classroom doors. She also did all other signages and other health protocol stickers that were badly needed in the preparation of the school self-assessment. With all the preparation done for 17 days, the region gave Marivic ES certificate that the school was ready for face-to-face classes. The LGU, BFP, PNP and RHU gave the school Safety Seal which was a go-signal to conduct face-to-face classes in Feb. 18, 2022.
She also coordinated the school's "Raise Me Up" Reading Program under the Brigada Pagbasa where all teachers were obliged to undertake reading remediation after classes. All classes took their pretest and post test in reading using the San Diego Quick Assessment tool with a high leap of improvement in all grade levels. She completed an action research entitled, "Stop, Look, Listen and Say," an Engaging Reading Intervention for Grade 2. She chose to focus on this grade level as they were the product of modular learning when they were in Grade 1. The result of the pretest showed that all the 33 learners were under frustration in their reading level so the Grade 2 teachers need to look into how they can give intervention to all these learners. Ms. Micklay worked closely with the Grade 2 teachers in coming up with an intervention that would suit the reading needs of the learners. After the intervention, the result was amazing as 97% of the learners moved to instructional and independent levels. Only one remained on the frustration level.
Despite being a Grade VI teacher, she volunteered and was committed to do one of the hardest module in Grade 3 entitled, "Panang-idawat si Udom ay Paulo sin Literary uno Informal Text." This was validated in the Division and was used by Kankana-ey speaking schools in the Division of Benguet.
She was also tasked to download and update the DepEd National, Regional and Division memoranda and fix them in the office for easy access by all the teachers. She is also a member of the School selection Board and Awards Committee.
She gives responsibilities to her Grade 6 learners to clean-up and maintain the cleanliness of the community pathways at the back of the school going to the main road. She leads them to pick litters along the Marivic roads.
She is very much loved by her learners an take inspiration from her as she is not only a smart, committed and dedicated teacher but a very good singer and instrumentalist. Creativity is also one of her strong points as she is inclined in arts such as basic painting, sketching and drawing.
