Manila City Jail Male Dorm Personnel Join Brigada Eskwela Efforts in Two Manila Public Schools

MANILA, Philippines – In support of the nationwide Brigada Eskwela 2026 campaign, personnel of the Manila City Jail Male Dorm (MCJMD), under the leadership of JSUPT MICHELLE NG BONTO, City Jail Warden, actively participated in school preparation activities at two public elementary schools in Manila on June 1, 2026.

The initiative forms part of Brigada Eskwela 2026, which runs from June 1 to 5 in preparation for the opening of School Year 2026–2027 on June 8. This year's theme, “Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman,” highlights the importance of volunteerism, community participation, and shared responsibility in ensuring school readiness and creating conducive learning environments for students.

In the morning, MCJMD personnel proceeded to Padre Gomez Elementary School in Sta. Cruz, Manila in response to the invitation of School Principal IV Randy R. Emen. The team assisted teachers in transferring school equipment and instructional materials from one classroom to another. They also took part in campus clean-up efforts by removing fallen tree branches, sweeping dried leaves, and clearing overgrown grass within the school grounds.

Later in the afternoon, another group of personnel extended the same spirit of service at Margarita Roxas de Ayala Elementary School in Sta. Ana, Manila upon the invitation of School Principal II Jonathan R. Guillermo. The personnel helped transfer bookshelves from the school's annex building to its main building and repainted a section of the campus to improve its appearance and create a more welcoming and conducive learning environment for students.

The participation of MCJMD personnel demonstrated the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology's commitment to community engagement beyond its custodial functions. Through collaborative efforts with school administrators, teachers, and volunteers, the activity contributed to ensuring that learning facilities are safe, clean, and ready for the return of students.

School officials expressed their appreciation for the support extended by the Manila City Jail Male Dorm, emphasizing that community partnerships play a vital role in the success of Brigada Eskwela and in fostering quality education for the youth.

The active involvement of MCJMD personnel reflects the enduring Filipino spirit of bayanihan, helping prepare schools for the next generation of learners while strengthening ties between government institutions and the communities they serve.

MCJMD Receives Plaque of Recognition from IBP Manila IV Chapter for Outstanding Partnership and Public Service

The Manila City Jail Male Dormitory (MCJMD) was honored by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Manila IV Chapter during "The Robe & The Road Ahead" Testimonial Dinner and General Assembly, held on May 30, 2026, at Hotel Lucky Chinatown in Binondo, Manila.

The IBP Manila IV Chapter, also known as the Conrado V. Sanchez Chapter and led by President Atty. Nelson M. Hanalili, awarded the recognition in appreciation of MCJMD's invaluable partnership, steadfast support, and meaningful contributions to the chapter's various programs and projects over the years.

JINSP ALVIN B PAGULAYAN received the Plaque of Recognition on behalf of MCJMD. The award highlighted MCJMD's commitment to collaboration, community engagement, and public service, recognizing its role in strengthening institutional partnerships and supporting initiatives that advance justice and civic responsibility.

For several years, the IBP Manila IV Chapter and MCJMD have maintained a strong partnership through various collaborative activities and community-centered programs. MCJMD has also been consistently invited to IBP events to showcase livelihood products made by Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs), such as paintings and artworks, which reflect their creativity, talent, and rehabilitation efforts.

The event also served as the chapter's first-ever general assembly and celebrated newly admitted members of the legal profession who recently passed the Bar examinations. It featured addresses from distinguished legal personalities, including Supreme Court Associate Justice JOSE MIDAS P. MARQUEZ and IBP National President ALLAN G. PANOLONG, who both emphasized the importance of integrity, service, and professionalism in the legal community.

JSUPT MICHELLE NG BONTO, City Jail Warden, expressed gratitude to the IBP Manila IV Chapter for the recognition and continued partnership.

"This recognition inspires us to continue strengthening our programs for rehabilitation, reintegration, and community partnership. We deeply appreciate the unwavering support of IBP Manila IV Chapter in helping promote opportunities for our PDLs, especially through livelihood and restorative initiatives that give them hope and dignity," she said.

Manila City Jail Male Dormitory Joins Zumba Fitness Activity for Mental Health Awareness

The Public Recreation Bureau of the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden successfully conducted the “Wild for Wellness: A Zumba Dance Fitness Celebration of Mental Health Awareness Day” on May 26, 2026, at the Manila Zoo along M. Adriatico Street, Malate, Manila, in line with the nationwide observance of Mental Health Awareness Month.

Carrying this year’s theme, “Nurturing Mind, Body, and Nature for a Healthier Community,” the activity gathered personnel from the Manila City Jail – Male Dormitory (MCJMD), members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Dance Fitness Team, and various Zumba fitness enthusiasts in a collective effort to promote physical fitness, mental wellness, stress management, and camaraderie through recreational activities.

Personnel from MCJMD actively participated in the event through the guidance and support of City jail Warden JSUPT MICHELLE NG BONTO, whose continued commitment to the welfare, health, and morale of personnel encouraged their involvement in programs that promote both physical and mental well-being.

The program formally opened with an invocation followed by a welcome message from Dr. Heinrich Patrick P. Domingo, Acting Assistant Director and Officer-in-Charge of the Zoological Division of the Public Recreation Bureau. In his message, Dr. Domingo emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy mind and body while fostering stronger connections with nature and the community.

“Dahil kapag malusog ang isip, malusog ang katawan, at may koneksyon tayo sa kalikasan at sa isa’t isa, mas malusog ang buong komunidad natin,” Dr. Domingo said.

The venue was filled with energy and enthusiasm as participants performed upbeat Zumba dance routines led by the BJMP and PNP teams, creating an atmosphere of positivity and community engagement.

Following the Zumba session, MCJMD personnel joined PNP personnel in the recreational game “Tug of War,” which further strengthened teamwork, unity, cooperation, and camaraderie among the participating groups.

The activity concluded with cool-down and breathing exercises aimed at promoting relaxation and overall wellness among participants.

Mental Health Awareness Month is observed every May nationwide to raise awareness on mental health concerns, encourage understanding and support, and promote accessible wellness activities for communities across the country.

Today, May 27, 2026, Muslims across the Philippines celebrate Eid’l Adha, also known as Eid al-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice. It is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam and is recognized as a regular holiday nationwide.

The UNITED ULAMA COUNCIL, in partnership with USTADZ YUNUS ABDULMUIN and the Manila City Jail–Male Dormitory (MCJMD), under the leadership of JSUPT MICHELLE NG BONTO, led the 255 Muslim Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in commemorating this sacred occasion.

BENSAR ABDULMUIN and ARAMEER SALARANI led the Eid al-Adha prayers. Eid al-Adha symbolizes faith, sacrifice, and devotion to Allah, inspired by the story of Prophet Abraham’s unwavering submission to God’s will. For Muslim PDLs, this celebration serves as a source of spiritual strength and hope.
Through congregational prayers, religious discussions, and fellowship, the Muslim PDLs were given the opportunity to deepen their faith and strengthen their relationship with Allah while inside the facility.

These meaningful activities provide spiritual and emotional support to Muslim PDLs, encouraging positive behavior, personal transformation, and a renewed sense of purpose. Moreover, the observance of Eid al-Adha at MCJMD reflects respect for religious freedom and highlights the importance of spiritual programs in the rehabilitation and reformation of PDLs.
