Heroes are not only found in the pages of history, but also in the people who continue to serve, protect, teach, heal, create, and uplift others every day. This National Heroes Day, we honor both the courage of those who fought for our freedom and the modern-day heroes who carry that same spirit of bravery, compassion, and service in todayโ€™s world.

Every rainy season, Filipino students are taught an unspoken lesson: ๐ž๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž.

๐’–๐’“๐’† the flooded roads. ๐’–๐’“๐’† the delayed announcements. ๐’–๐’“๐’† the commute home with water slowly creeping up our legs. ๐’–๐’“๐’† the anxiety of wondering whether it is safe to travel. ๐’–๐’“๐’† the classes moved online, even when electricity and internet connections are unreliable. ๐’–๐’“๐’† the academic workload that remains waiting after the floodwaters recede.

And when we manage to get through it all, we are called But what happens ๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ง ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐›๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐จ๐ง๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ž ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ฎ๐ฌ?

The recent southwest monsoon, or Habagat, has once again exposed how vulnerable our communitiesโ€”and especially our studentsโ€”remain to flooding. More than 10,000 public schools were reported to have suspended in-person classes earlier this month, affecting around 6.5 million learners and nearly 289,000 school personnel. On the 17th of August 2026 alone, rainfall in Metro Manila reached 201.7 millimeters within five hours,

These numbers are staggering, but numbers cannot fully capture what it means to be a student caught in a flood. For many students, the problem is not merely that classes are suspended. Resilience is the ability to recover from adversity. It is valuable, even necessary. In Biology, organisms survive because they respond to changing environments. But there is a limit to how much an organism can compensate before the stress becomes damaging.

Neither should we.

Somewhere along the way, Filipino resilience has been romanticized into something else. We celebrate the student who wades through floodwater to attend class. We praise the worker who reports despite dangerous roads. We admire the family that rebuilds after every disaster.

A society should not measure its strength by how much suffering its people can tolerate.

Flooding is not simply a natural phenomenon that arrives with the rain. Its effects are shaped by drainage systems, waste management, urban planning, infrastructure, disaster preparedness, communication, and the speed and quality of government response. The fact that government agencies and schools already have contingency plans for flooding shows that these disruptions are foreseeable. Government advisories themselves call for the inspection of drainage systems, activation of emergency protocols, and preparation for flooding and other hazards.

Yet students still find themselves caught between weather warnings and late decisions.

A suspension should prevent exposure to danger, not merely acknowledge it afterward.

And while alternative learning modes may keep education moving, they cannot automatically make education accessible. Online learning assumes electricity, devices, connectivity, a conducive and salubrious place to study, and enough stability at home to concentrate. For students whose homes are flooded or whose families are struggling to recover,

The floodwaters will eventually recede. Streets will dry. Classes will resume. Deadlines will return. We will joke about the rain, post photographs, help clean our homes, and tell ourselves that we survived once again.

But survival cannot be the end of the conversation.

After the flood recedes, let us not simply dry ourselves and move on.

Let us remember where the water reached.

Let us remember who were stranded.

Let us remember which promises were delayed.

And most importantly, let us remember which systems failed.
