On the Killing of Nestor Micator

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) condemns the killing of radio broadcaster Nestor “Teting” Micator in Malidegao town, Special Geographic Area of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), on the evening of May 21.

Based on initial police reports, Micator, a news anchor and commentator of D’Empire Radio in Pikit, Cotabato, was shot by an unidentified assailant while about to board his motorcycle outside the barangay hall of Barangay Fort Pikit, in the presence of his wife. The suspect reportedly fled with an accomplice after the attack.

PTFOMS strongly condemns this act of violence and extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and listeners of Mr. Micator.

Authorities are still investigating the incident to determine the motive behind the killing, including whether the incident was connected to his work as a broadcaster or his role as a member of the Lupong Pambarangay. We urge investigators to pursue all possible angles and ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice swiftly.

The killing of any media practitioner is a matter of serious concern. Acts of violence against journalists undermine not only press freedom, but also the public’s right to information and the democratic space where issues affecting communities are discussed openly.

PTFOMS is closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police and other concerned agencies regarding the progress of the investigation. We call on local authorities and the community to cooperate fully in efforts to identify the perpetrators and establish accountability.

We reiterate our commitment to uphold the safety and security of media workers across the country and to strengthen mechanisms that protect journalists from threats, harassment, and violence.

Morning session: “Empowering Women Journalists: A Workshop to Institutionalize Gender-Responsive Media Protection.”

Women journalists from across Cebu gathered for discussions on issues and challenges they face in the course of their work, including personal safety, online threats, mental wellness, and gender-based harassment in media spaces.

The activity, titled “Empowering Women Journalists: A Workshop to Institutionalize Gender-Responsive Media Protection,” was initiated by the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) with the support of the European Union and International Media Support (IMS), in partnership with the private sector, particularly PLDT and Smart.

As part of the workshop, participants underwent practical sessions on safety and survival techniques during disasters and emergency situations, basic self-protection and response strategies in the event of physical attacks while on coverage, and coping with mental health issues. The training aimed to strengthen the preparedness, resilience, and overall security awareness of women journalists working in the field.
