The devotion to the Virgen de la Consolacion began when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Monica of Tagaste, Mother of the future St. Augustine of Hippo who was at that time a wayward child who is very invested to the pleasures of the world. The Blessed Virgin appeared in mourning clothes and gave her cincture and asked Monica to wear it as a sign of her maternal consolation and protection.
Tradition has it that the Chord (Correa in Spanish) was immediately worn by Monica and later gave it to his son after his conversion. The Correa would later became part of the habit of the Augustinian Order that can still be seen in all branches of the Augustinian family.

PRAYER
We salute you Mary, Queen of heaven and earth, Mother of Consolation. Mindful of the power with which Jesus your Son has blessed you, we implore your protection as the source of all true consolation. After the trials and sorrows of our life's pilgrimage, you can console your children with the glory of which you are the dispenser and with the joys of paradise of which you are the gate. May our poor efforts to love you, dearest Mother, be helped by your more than maternal care.
Deign then to listen to your children's prayer, and grant us the grace that we ask in this Prayer... (pause) O Mother of Consolation, grant that, under your care and protection, we may reach the home of eternal rest, where we may for ever bless your Divine Son. Amen.

Schedule of Novena Masses for Fiesta de Intramuros 2026 in San Agustín Church in honor of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación y Correa de Intramuros

The bishops of the Philippines will once again grace the Novena and Fiesta Masses for the Patronal Solemnity of Our Lady of Consolation, Queen and Patroness of Intramuros.

Each day of the Novena, which will commence on September 3rd, will include the praying of the traditional Coronilla of Our Lady of Consolation, followed by the Novena Prayers and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This year, one whole day is dedicated for the Eve of the Patronal Solemnity (called the Visperas), and in the evening of that day, His Grace, Most Rev. Charles J. Brown, D.D., Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines will celebrate the Holy Mass.

The celebration of Fiesta de Intramuros 2026 will reach its peak during the Misa Mayor of the Patronal Solemnity on September 13th, 2026, Second Sunday of September, which will be celebrated by His Eminence, Jose F. Cardinal Advincula, D.D., Archbishop of Manila. On this day, the whole community of Intramuros will liturgically observe the Solemnity in all Masses held inside the Walled City.

PRAYER TO SAINT AUGUSTINE

We humbly supplicate and beseech thee, O thrice-blessed Augustine, that thou wouldst be mindful of us poor sinners this day, daily, and at the hour of our death, that by thy merits and prayers we may be delivered from all evils, of soul as well as body, and daily increase in virtue and good works; obtain for us that we may know our God and know ourselves, that in His mercy He may cause us to love Him above all things in life and death; impart to us, we beseech thee, some share of that love with which thou so ardently glow, that our hearts being all inflamed with this divine love, happily departing out of this mortal pilgrimage, we may deserve to praise with thee the loving heart of Jesus for a never-ending eternity. Amen.

THE SOLEMNITY OF OUR HOLY FATHER, SAINT AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO

The whole Augustinian family celebrates today with great joy the Solemnity of Our Holy Father, Saint Augustine. Our dearest father was born in 354 in Tagaste, Algeria to Patricius, his non-believing father, and to Monica, his devout Christian mother. Augustine in his younger years lived a life of difficulty that caused pain to her mother, Monica, which prompted her to relentlessly storm the heavens in prayer for the conversion of her son.

He was raised to receive the finest education in the region which molded him to become a teacher who travelled to numerous places. In Rome, he founded a school for the rhetoric before transferring to Milan. While in Milan, he met St. Ambrose who left an impression on him and finally baptized him to the Catholic faith-the conversion and change of heart that her mother had prayed for in perseverance. He took a vow of celibacy eventhough he was not obliged as a layman and as someone living with a woman whom he loved and fathered a son with whose name is Adeodatus.

Augustine returned to Tagaste together with his son and several companios and there lived a life of prayer and work. While on a visit to the city of Hippo, he was called to be a priest following the will of God. There he established numerous monasteries until he succeeded Valerius as the bishop of Hippo. There he wrote his rule that must be followed by the monastic communities that he founded. He then returned to Tagaste where continued his monastic style of life until he fell ill and died on August 28, 430. His remains were laid to rest in Hippo, then transferred to Sardinia for safety and finally in the Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d'oro.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER TO SAINT AUGUSTINE
God of truth, the desire of our hearts, we praise you for your love that touched the heart of Saint Augustine and awakened in him the quest for your truth.

Attracted by the good things you made, he learned to seek your face and to know the joy of your presence. The name of Christ, echoing from infancy in the depths of his heart, called him back to your Word, the Teacher who dwells within.

With Saint Augustine, we praise the work of your love, and proclaim your action of grace in our lives. Through his intercession, we ask you to hear our prayers (Pause and recall your intentions.) Teach us daily to live by his example so that our restless hearts may find your peace, and our lives may rejoice in your love. Amen.

PRESIDER | SOLEMNITY OF OUR HOLY FATHER SAINT AUGUSTINE – AUGUST 28, 2026

On this blessed and joyous day, we celebrate San Agustin, our patron and a towering witness to the transforming grace of God.

His life was marked by a restless search for truth—a journey that ultimately led him to Christ, where his heart found the fulfillment it had long desired. From conversion to discipleship, San Agustin embraced a life wholly given to God, becoming a teacher of the faith and a shepherd whose words and witness continue to guide the Church.

As we celebrate his feast, may we too be moved by the same desire that shaped his life: to seek the truth, to love God with an undivided heart, and to allow His grace to transform us.

The Holy Eucharist will be presided over by His Excellency Most Rev. Euginius I. Canete, MJ, DD, Roman Catholic Diocese of Gumaca.
