This morning alongside EU colleagues, Deputy Head of Mission Erica Duffy presented Ireland’s submission for this year’s Cine Europa film festival, “Four Mothers”. The film explores the struggles faced by sole carers for elderly relatives, and the attempt to balance familial duty with the desire to live our lives to the fullest extent possible. DHOM Erica stated during the panel discussion “at the heart of story-telling is the human experience, something the crosses national, linguistic and cultural lines. That is why it is so important that we can participate in festivals such as Cine Europa”.

Today we celebrate Europe Day. For more than 50 years, Ireland’s 🇮🇪 membership of the European Union has had an overwhelmingly positive impact across all dimensions of Irish society.

EU membership has been central to Ireland’s development and transformation into a modern, open and innovative economy.

Closer integration with our European partners has helped to make us all safer, stronger and more prosperous.

From July to December 2026, Ireland will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union – a central leadership role at the heart of EU decision-making.

For six months, Ireland will guide negotiations, broker agreement between Member States, and help deliver EU laws and policies that affect the daily lives of more than 450 million people.

Did you know that the Philippines is one of the largest social media users globally and Ireland is home to the European HQ of Meta, TikTok and Google?

The Embassy was therefore pleased to host a digitalisation dinner bringing together industry leaders to look into the Philippines’ digital future.

The evening focused on the country’s strong potential, driven by a young, connected population, and how AI can be used as an opportunity. Ireland was cited as an example of a successful technology and innovation hub. We look forward to collaborating to help drive inclusivity for digital growth in the Philippines

🇮🇪🤝🇲🇭

Last month, Ambassador Emma Hickey was honoured to present her credentials to the President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Dr Hilda Heine. It is not often that letters of credence are both signed and received by women Presidents! In so doing she became the first Irish Ambassador to ever visit the beautiful Pacific country.

As well as the President she had the opportunity to meet with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice and Education, Parliament Speaker, Vice Chair of the Council of Chiefs, and the President’s adviser on youth and women. She also hosted a round table with civil society organisations and met with ADB to hear about their work implementing Ireland’s Trust Fund.

The Embassy looks forward to following up on useful exchanges on climate change, human rights and education.

Did you know that women are celebrated for a whole month in the Philippines and not just for one day like in most parts of the world? Ambassador Emma Hickey was delighted to join a lunch hosted by British Embassy Manila Ambassador Sarah Hulton to mark the occasion. The gathering, also attended by First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, provided an opportunity to discuss the Philippines and Embassies’ initiatives to advance gender equality.
