The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Regional Office IX joined the Department of Trade and Industryโ€™s (DTI) ZAMPEX 2026, themed โ€œEVOLVE โ€ข EXPAND โ€ข EXCEL,โ€ bringing together Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from across the region. Among the participating enterprises were businesses owned and managed by Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), reflecting the growing contribution of returning and entrepreneurial OFWs to local economic development.

18 OFW entrepreneurs participated from Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Isabela City, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, and Sulu. The showcase also featured former and active seafarers who have successfully ventured into entrepreneurship.

Through its active participation in ZAMPEX 2026, the Department continues to recognize and support the entrepreneurial potential of OFWs, highlighting how overseas work experience can serve as a strong foundation for building sustainable businesses and livelihoods in their home communities.

HAPPENING NOW: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), through DMW Region II, officially opens the Bayanihan para sa Balikbayang Manggagawa โ€“ National Reintegration Network (BBM-NRN) Fair held in Cagayan Provincial Coliseum, bringing government agencies and partners together to provide essential services, employment opportunities, and livelihood support for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families.

The fair features a service caravan, local and overseas job opportunities, financial assistance for qualified beneficiaries, and an exhibit of products from OFW entrepreneursโ€”all aimed at supporting returning migrant workers and creating sustainable opportunities for their successful reintegration.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Regional Office XI, in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Davao City Field Office, conducted an entrepreneurship and financial literacy activity on October 2, 2026, at the DTI Regional Office XI in Davao City.

Anchored on the theme โ€œEmpowering OFWs Through Entrepreneurship: Mindset, Marketing and Financial Literacy,โ€ the activity gathered 30 participants for a Financial Awareness Seminar and Small Business Management Training focused on practical knowledge for starting and managing a small enterprise.

Through the continued collaboration between DMW and DTI, OFWs and their families are provided not only with access to livelihood assistance but also with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed financial decisions, develop viable business ideas, and manage their resources more effectively. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to supporting the economic reintegration of OFWs by helping them explore sustainable opportunities beyond employment overseas.

After returning to the Philippines in April 2026 due to the conflict in the Middle East, Karen Quelnan, a former OFW in Jeddah, decided to make use of her background in computer programming and learn a new skill through the Kaalaman Tungo sa Kabuhayan (K2K) Program of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

In partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and STI College, Karen took the Data Collection and Annotation (Data Science โ€“ Artificial Intelligence) Level II course at STI Vigan in Ilocos Sur.

Karen said the training gave her an additional skill that she can use as she looks for opportunities in the Philippines. She also encourages fellow OFWs to take advantage of the K2K Program, which provides opportunities to learn new skills that can be useful for employment or livelihood, whether in the Philippines or abroad.

A total of 50 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Caraga benefited from โ‚ฑ750,000 in livelihood assistance released by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Regional Office XIII through the Enhanced Livelihood Program for Overseas Filipino Workers Reintegration (ELPOR) on October 2, 2026. Each beneficiary received โ‚ฑ15,000 to help establish or strengthen their livelihood ventures and build sustainable sources of income.

The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the Department for the assistance, which would help them start or strengthen livelihood ventures in their respective communities, generate income, and support their families.

Through these initiatives, the DMW continues to bring livelihood support closer to returning OFWs and their communities, helping them transition toward sustainable income-generating activities and economic reintegration.

DMW Region 10 celebrates Philippine Creative Industries Month by featuring former OFW and fashion designer Shine Casiรฑo. His journey from working abroad to making a mark in the local fashion scene exemplifies the creativity and talent of our migrant workers.

Casiรฑo, a returning OFW from Cagayan de Oro City, gained experience in the fashion industry while working in Sharjah, Dubai, in 2007-2008. He continues to pursue his passion for fashion design in the Philippines as Chairman of the Mindanao Fashion Summit, where he makes significant contributions to the local creative industry through design, community involvement, and collaborations that use local materials and cultural products.
