Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental – Strengthening food safety practices and improving the quality of food preparation among community organizations took center stage as the Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) Awareness Seminar was successfully conducted in Sitio Kimonsol, Brgy. Nueva Villa, Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental.

The activity brought together members of the Kimonsol Vegetable Farmers Association (KVFA) through a collaborative effort between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Davao Occidental and the Department of Social Welfare and Development – Enhanced Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (DSWD-EPAHP) XI.

Designed to capacitate identified potential community-based organizations (CBOs) prior to their engagement as service providers under the DSWD Supplementary Feeding Program, the seminar aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of food safety and equip them with practical knowledge on proper food handling, sanitation, and hygiene practices. Beyond compliance, the initiative sought to strengthen their capability to prepare and deliver safe, quality food while minimizing the risks of contamination.

Leading the session was Ms. Dorothy Joy M. Candilas, PFT, Science Research Specialist II of DOST Davao Region, who served as the resource person for the activity. Through an engaging discussion, Ms. Candilas underscored the vital role of Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) in food safety, emphasizing that its “current” component promotes the adoption of up-to-date technologies, modern sanitation practices, and continuously improving standards essential in protecting consumer health.

The successful conduct of the seminar underscores the continuing partnership between DOST Davao Region and DSWD-EPAHP XI in advancing community development through science, technology, and capacity-building initiatives. Through collaborative efforts such as this, local organizations are empowered not only to improve their operations but also to play a more active role in promoting food security, public health, and inclusive community growth.

START OF THE SOUTHWEST MONSOON

Ahead of the possible onset of the rainy season, the DOST-PAGASA officially announces the start of the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat over the Philippines, which is one of the precursors of the onset of the rainy season.

As Habagat becomes the dominant weather system, occasional to frequent rains and thunderstorms are expected, particularly over the western sections of the country. These conditions may signal the possible onset of the rainy season in the coming days.

However, there may be rain breaks that last a few days or weeks, known as monsoon breaks.
