Towards Achieving Rabies-Free Status in Davao Occidental, E.O No. 84 (Series of 1999), which declared March as Rabies Awareness Month, has been a cornerstone in our commitment to address the threat of Rabies in our Province. In collaboration with various municipalities, the Provincial Veterinary Office will conduct a comprehensive Rabies Awareness Campaign, promoting Responsible Pet Ownership and Mass Rabies Vaccination as mandated by Republic Act No. 9482 (Anti-Rabies Act of 2007).

This is part of the Banner Program Arangkada Para SA Barangay as Per SP Resolution No. 35-2017. We are pleased to announce that we will also conduct Free Consultation and Basic Animal Health Care services to demonstrate our commitment to the well-being of our community.

The schedule for the Rabies Awareness activities in various municipalities is as follows:

๐Ÿพ Municipality of Don Marcellino: March 5-8, 2024
๐Ÿพ Municipality of Sarangani: March 12-16, 2024
๐Ÿพ Municipality of Jose Abad Santos: March 19-23, 2024
๐Ÿพ Municipality of Sta. Maria: March 26, 2024
๐Ÿพ Municipality of Malita: March 27, 2024

We believe that through these initiatives, we can effectively raise awareness about rabies prevention and ensure that all pet owners have access to the necessary resources for responsible pet care. ๐Ÿ’š

The Philippine Swine Foundation, Inc. (PSFI) collaborated with various government agencies to conduct an epidemiological study on African Swine Fever (ASF), a highly contagious disease that poses a serious threat to the local hog industry in the Philippines. The study aimed to trace the ASF outbreak's source and understand how the virus is transmitted.

Upon completion of the study, a meeting was held to share the findings and recommendations. This meeting was led by Liza Mae A. Rapisura, the Assistant Provincial Veterinarian of Davao Occidental, and Raul M. Berro from the PSFI. It took place at the Municipal Agriculture Office in Poblacion, Malita, Davao Occidental, with members of the Local Government Unit (LGU), farm technicians, and farmers/hog raisers in attendance.

A key point likely discussed during the meeting is the importance of basic biosecurity measures. These include practices such as limiting farm visitors, ensuring cleanliness and disinfection of vehicles and equipment, and providing clean housing and feed for pigs. By implementing these measures, the risk of ASF and other diseases spreading can be significantly reduced, playing a crucial role in protecting the local hog industry.

May 22-24,2023

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Avian Influenza (AI), and Hog Cholera are highly contagious diseases that can severely impact the animal industry in the Philippines. Ensuring our poultry and livestock are free from these diseases is essential for the sustainability of our animal production.

To manage this, the Provincial Veterinary Office of Davao Occidental, under the guidance of Assistant Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Liza Mae A. Rapisura, and the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office XI, overseen by Kenneth Dino, DVM, undertook an initiative to monitor these diseases. This involved the collection of blood and swab samples from poultry, large and small ruminants, and swine in selected barangays in Sta. Maria and Malita, Davao Occidental.

The collection of these samples allows for the detection of disease-causing organisms in animals. Early detection is crucial for preventing the spread of contagious diseases like FMD, AI, and Hog Cholera, which can rapidly spread and cause significant harm to animal populations.

Through their proactive efforts in disease monitoring and control, Dr. Rapisura, Kenneth Dino, and their respective teams are playing a critical role in safeguarding the Philippines' animal industry and ensuring its long-term sustainability.

On May 9, 11, and 12, 2023, the Provincial Veterinary Office of Davao Occidental, under the guidance of Assistant Provincial Veterinarian Liza Mae A. Rapisura, carried out a program known as "ARANGKADA para sa Barangay". This initiative took place in Balut Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental and involved a Rabies Vaccination drive for dogs and cats, as well as vitamin supplementation and deworming for livestock and poultry.

The Rabies Vaccination drive resulted in a total of 106 dogs and cats being vaccinated over these three days. This included 47 male dogs, 30 female dogs, 14 male cats, and 11 female cats. Vaccinating pets against rabies is essential for preventing the spread of this fatal disease among animals and potentially to humans.

In addition to the vaccination drive, the program also catered to the health of livestock and poultry. A total of 1,144 animals received vitamin supplementation and deworming treatments. This included 50 turkeys (Pabo), 850 chickens (Manok), 38 ducks (Pato), 135 goats (Kambing), 48 pigs (Baboy), 8 cows (Baka), and 15 horses (Kabayo).

These proactive health initiatives by the Provincial Veterinary Office play a vital role in maintaining the well-being of pets and livestock in the region, as well as protecting the community by preventing the spread of diseases. This contributes significantly to a healthy and sustainable animal industry in Davao Occidental. ๐Ÿ˜Š

The Veterinary Office of Davao Occidental recently conducted a validation process for the Organic Goat Dispersal, a project under the Organic Agriculture Program of the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office XI (DA-RFO XI). This project is part of the fiscal year 2023 initiatives.

A key part of this project was the turnover ceremony where one packet of goats, consisting of six heads, was given to the Balut Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (BATODA). This event was overseen by the DA-RFO XI and is part of their organic goat production project.

The Department of Agriculture in the Davao region (DA-11) is actively promoting organic goat production as a way to improve farming, livelihood, and income, especially for farmers in remote areas. As part of its Organic Goat Herd Build-Up project, the upgraded native goats will be raised by the 88 farmer-members of BATODA for meat production.

The Mayor of Sarangani, Adelan de Arce, expressed that this assistance is a significant help for the municipality, which is currently experiencing a shortage of meat products, including those from goats.

DA-11's Regional Executive Director, Abel James Monteagudo, represented by DA-11 Agricultural Program Coordinating Officer (APCO) for Davao Occidental, Ray Reintar, stated that the DA is promoting goat farming, especially in remote areas. This is due to the low initial investment required for goat farming, as goats primarily feed on tree leaves, grasses, weeds, and agricultural by-products.

In summary, this initiative is a significant step towards improving farming practices, boosting livelihoods, and increasing the income of farmers in Davao Occidental, particularly those in remote areas.
