According to Aya (2025) of the DOST–PCAARRD Science and Technology Media Services, approximately 700,000 rubber smallholders and tappers in Mindanao depend on rubber farming as their primary source of livelihood. In the previous year, the Philippines exported rubber products valued at approximately US$131 million, with major export destinations including Malaysia, China, South Korea, Indonesia, and Vietnam, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), as cited by Aya (2025).

Female aphids are parthenogenetic, meaning they can give birth without mating—no males needed. Even more amazing, a female aphid can carry babies that already have their own babies developing inside them. This unique ability helps aphid populations grow super-fast in a short amount of time. This makes aphids one of the most challenging pests for farmers to manage, requiring early monitoring and timely control.

𝗥𝗖𝗣𝗖 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦| DA-RFO 10 boosts training on corn pest, disease identification, management to improve crop health

MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon — The Department of Agriculture-RFO 10, through its Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC), equipped 50 participants with technical knowledge and skills on Enhanced Corn Pest and Disease Identification and Management Training on May 5-7,2026, in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon.

The training aimed to strengthen participants’ capability to identify and effectively manage corn pests and diseases to improve crop health while minimizing production losses.

Participants include representatives from the Farmers’ Associations (FAs), Local Government Units (LGUs), Provincial Agriculture Office, the Bureau of PIant Industry-Plant Quarantine Service 10 (BPI-PQS 10), and academic institutions in Northern Mindanao.

The participants underwent lectures and hands-on training in sample collection and the identification of various corn pests and diseases.

RCPC Chief Lucille Minguez emphasized the importance of the knowledge and skills gained in protecting farmers, crops, and food security.

She further underscored the value of continued collaboration, proactivity, and dedication to public service in supporting and protecting the corn industry.

Meanwhile, Christian Dave R. Balasan of BPI-PQS 10, shared, “By bridging the gap between technical pathology, entomology, and practical field assessment, we gained the technical clarity needed to distinguish between pests, diseases, and BCAs. As one of the participants, I am confident that these insights will lead to significantly improved crop stewardship in our roles as agriculturists.”

Through sustained partnerships with various stakeholders, DA-10 continues to promote sustainable agriculture, empowering communities to take an active role in protecting and developing the region’s agricultural sector. #

𝙲𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚟𝚒𝚜𝚒𝚃𝙾𝚄𝚁𝚂:

Ninety (90) students and six (6) faculty members from the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, major in Animal Science and Agronomy, visited the DA–Regional Crop Protection Center X on April 23, 2026, as part of their educational tour for the ANS 196 and AGM 196 (Seminar and Field Trip) courses.

The participants enhanced their knowledge of biological control agents—covering their modes of action, application methods, target pests and diseases, and their relevance in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system.

𝗥𝗖𝗣𝗖 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦| DA-RFO 10 conducts training to strengthen rice pest and disease identification and management

MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon — Around 30 participants were trained during the Enhanced Rice Pest and Disease Identification and Management Training conducted on April 6-8, 2026, in Cagayan de Oro City.

The Department of Agriculture-RFO 10, through its Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC), equipped the participants with the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to identify and effectively manage rice pests and diseases to improve crop health while minimizing production losses.

The participants were representatives from Farmers’ Associations (FAs), Local Government Units (LGUs), academic institutions, and individual farmers in Northern Mindanao who underwent lectures, and hands-on exercises on identifying various rice pests and diseases.

RCPC Chief Lucille Minguez emphasized that accurate identification and proper diagnosis are essential to ensure the effective management of rice pests and diseases.

She further expressed hope that participants will apply the knowledge they have acquired in their respective fields.

One of the participants, Jomar Anciano of Dykid Farmers Association shared, “Dili lang kini basta pagtuon—kini usa ka survival toolkit aron maprotektahan ang among pagpaningkamot sa umahan.”

Through sustained partnerships with various stakeholders, DA-10 continues to promote sustainable agriculture, empowering communities to play an active role in protecting and developing the region’s agricultural sector. #

The 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 (𝗕𝗣𝗛) may be silent to our ears, but they are surprisingly noisy. Instead of chirping through the air like crickets, they "sing" by vibrating their abdomens against rice stems. These vibrations travel through the plant—almost like messages sent through a telephone wire—to attract mates. Even more fascinating, male planthoppers use "rival calls," vibrating at specific frequencies to interrupt or jam the signals of competing males nearby.
