Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Manila

Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Manila The Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Manila is the official representation of the Kingdom of Belgium in the Republic of the Philippines.

Official diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Belgium and Republic of the Philippines were established on 4 July 1946. However, records show that as far back as 1837 a Belgian Consul already operated in Manila, and in 1845 Belgium was represented by a Consul General. In 1935-1940, reports about the Philippines were being received from Washington, and a consul was stationed in Manila during the war. Then in 1946, reports originated from Washington, Madrid and Nanjing, but in January 1949 the Belgian government decided to open a legation in Manila with a Chargรฉ dโ€™affaires, Mr. Guillaume, who later presented his credentials on 25 September 1952 as โ€œMinister of Belgiumโ€.

This International Day of Democracy is an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world.

Democracy is as much a process as it is a goal.

Only with the full participation of, and support by, the international community, national governing bodies and civil society, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality. To be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere.

| During a courtesy meeting with Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard, Belgian Ambassador Vladislava Iordanova reaffirmed Belgiumโ€™s commitment to deeper cooperation on maritime governance, port security, training, innovation, and maritime resilience. Consul and Deputy Head of Mission Marta Hermez along with Belgian Trade Office in Manila Head Mia Abela were also present during the meeting.

The discussions built on the momentum of Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prรฉvotโ€™s recent visit and the growing partnership between Belgian and Philippine maritime stakeholders.

This engagement also follows the successful March 2026 mission to Belgium, including exchanges at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and looks ahead to the upcoming visit of Port of Antwerp-Bruges International to the Philippines this September, further advancing practical cooperation and knowledge-sharing in the maritime sector. โš“๐ŸŒŠ

"Lโ€™Archipel et le Plat Pays (The Archipelago and the Flat Country):
Pages from the shared history of Belgium and the Philippines

The Philippine Leg of the Exhibit from University of Namur
14 โ€“ 18 September 2026 | Palma Hall Lobby, UP Diliman

Organized by the UP Department of History, Universitรฉ de Namur, Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Manila, UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, Philippine Association of Belgian University Scholars (PhilABUS), and the Join Strategic Framework Philippines.

The Opening Program of the Exhibit will be hold on 14 September 2026 (Monday), 10-11am, at the Palma Hall Ground Floor Lobby, UP Diliman.

Overview

This exhibition traces the remarkable and often unexpected connections between Belgium and the Philippines across five centuries of shared history. From the period when both territories were linked under the Spanish Crown, to the circulation of goods, ideas, missionaries, and travelers, the exhibit explores encounters that shaped both societies. It examines Belgiumโ€™s nineteenth-century ambitions toward the Philippine archipelago, the transformative stay of Josรฉ Rizal in Brussels and Ghent where he completed El Filibusterismo (1891), the complex legacy of the 1913 Ghent World Exhibition, and the visit of the future King Leopold III to the Philippines. The story culminates in the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1946 and their evolution into a modern partnership grounded in development cooperation, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties. An additional concluding panel brings the narrative to the present day, highlighting the 80th anniversary of Philippine-Belgian diplomatic relations in 2026, the visit of Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Maxime Prรฉvot to Manila, and ongoing efforts to preserve and renew the shared legacy of Rizal for future generations, demonstrating that new pages continue to be written in the story of the โ€œArchipelago and the Flat Country.โ€

Iedereen, UGent! (Everyone, UGent!) With a bustling student population, living and studying in Ghent truly feels like the whole city is your campus.

As we started our studies in 2017, we were lucky to find ourselves in the middle of a celebration - UGent's 200th Founding Anniversary. Two years later, we were able to receive our diplomas at the same building on the background, the UFO or the University Forum, which houses the University's largest auditorium.

Editor's note: The school year is about to start. We wish safe travels and good luck to all new Filipino scholars. Succes! Bonne chance!
