As part of its efforts to drive more business and investments, the Department of Tourism (DOT) SOCCSKSARGEN Office organized a forum on Friday (Sept. 4) to pitch high-yield tourism portfolio that can stimulate travel in General Santos City and Sarangani.

The forum provided an avenue for local and national government offices to demonstrate the regionโ€™s established tourism base, along with investment incentives they can offer to key financiers, property developers, and tourism enterprises.

In light of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that jolted Southern Mindanao last June, the investment forum also sought support for the recovery of affected tourism stakeholders in some the localityโ€™s hardest hit areas.

Supported by the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA), the forum also featured prospective ventures on the regionโ€™s retirement hub, wellness facilities, and eco-tourism destinations.

Meanwhile, local executives from the Municipality of Kiamba, Sarangani Province, and General Santos City also shared their respective investment profiles, unique value propositions, and existing markets in their area.

Known as the Tuna Capital of the Philippines, General Santos City presented investment opportunities in its emerging dive, and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism portfolio.

The municipality of Kiamba in Sarangani also made a strong pitch for its beaches and natural attractions, including its famed Tuka Marine Park, among other tourism hubs.

The countryโ€™s longest-running domestic tourism fair, 37th Philippine Travel Mart (PTM), organized by the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA) in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), opened on Friday (September 4) at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

This yearโ€™s fair features 307 exhibitors, offering visitors and travelers discounted hotel stays, flight deals, tour packages, and curated travel services. Through its regional offices, the DOT showcases destinations, experiences, local products, and cultural heritage from across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said the DOTโ€™s participation reflects its push for a more inclusive and forward-looking tourism industry that connects travelers with Filipino communities while generating opportunities throughout the tourism value chain.

Open to the public until Sunday (September 6), the PTM serves as both a consumer expo and a business-to-business networking hub designed to boost domestic travel and showcase the governmentโ€™s latest tourism initiatives.

On August 22, the communities of Hapao, Baang, and Nungulunan in Hungduan, Ifugao, gathered along the Nunhipukana in the Hapao River for Punnuk, a sacred post-harvest thanksgiving ritual that brings the rice-growing cycle to a close.

At the heart of the ritual is the ๐˜จ๐˜ถ๐˜บ๐˜บ๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ, a traditional tugging game performed in the river using the ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ, a hooked wooden pole, and the ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข-๐˜ข๐˜จ, a human-like figure made from rice stalks. More than a contest of strength, the tugging embodies community unity, cooperation, thanksgiving, and hope for abundance in the coming agricultural cycle. At the conclusion, the ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข-๐˜ข๐˜จ is released into the river, signaling downstream communities that the harvest has been completed.

Punnuk is part of the โ€œTugging Rituals and Gamesโ€ inscribed in 2015 on UNESCOโ€™s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity โ€“ a shared heritage tradition across rice-farming communities in East and Southeast Asia.
For the visitors who traveled from near and far, Punnuk offered more than a spectacle. It was a glimpse into a tradition that continues to live through the people who practice, protect, and pass it on.

Punnuk 2026 - a living expression of harvest, heritage, and community.

One of the traditional meanings behind releasing the ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข-๐˜ข๐˜จ into the river is to signal downstream communities that the harvest has been completed, and that it is once again permissible to eat fish, shellfish, and other foods with a distinct fishy smell. These foods were traditionally avoided during the harvest season, making the ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข-๐˜ข๐˜จโ€™s journey downstream not only a signal of the harvestโ€™s end, but also of the return to customary practices and everyday life.
