The denim donation drive is back! Our sewers finished 135 schoolbags for Sulu students with the last batch of donations and now we're out of fabric. Donate your old denim/maong pants today so we can send more schoolbags to Sulu. We are helping roughly 1,300 students across 9 schools and learning centers. Dropoff site is in Makati.

Over 300 paperback and hardcover graphic novels are for sale at the Vault Card Shop in Circuit Mall, Makati for a cause. Sales will cover library upkeep, school outreach activities, and an electric wheelchair for someone who needs it. 📚 THE HERNANDEZ LIBRARY: BOOK SALE FOR A CAUSE

When dad died in 2018, I was overcome by grief but eventually pulled myself from depression by immersing myself in the Marvel multiverse and other comicbook stories. Today, in honor of him and this special day, I’ve decided to let go of these treasured pieces and share them for a greater purpose.

Progress Update on Denim Schoolbags for Sulu Students:

Mothers from San Pedro, Laguna communities are now hard at work sewing the donated and cut denim into school bags for young students in Sulu. :) Many thanks to the donors and volunteers for your assistance and support!

This past Sunday marks the 12th anniversary of Lolo Romy's passing. Before he was a lolo or even a father, he was a poor student in UP who devoted his time to studying in the library when he wasn't in class because he couldn't afford the readings. He graduated UP Political Science as Valedictorian. Plucked from law school, he joined the government service as an entry-level researcher. He rose through the ranks thanks to his constant studies, buying just one book every payday that he'd read to qualify for promotions at every turn. He retired in 2000, having served as an Undersecretary for a decade in the National Security Council of the Philippines.

Lolo Romy was my inspiration for joining the Philippine Foreign Service in 2016. I gave up American citizenship for this, spurred on by stories my late father had told me and all his encouragement along the way.

When Lolo Romy died, I inherited all his books. When dad passed four years later, I inherited more books. Now the Hernandez Library stands in Makati, with outreach to schools in Sulu since December 2023. Lolo Romy's legacy lives on.

22 kits made. 1300 target. A long way to go but a good start already. :)
