ALABEL, Sarangani (June 10, 2026) โ The Provincial Government of Sarangani has declared a State of Calamity on June 10, following the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of the province on June 8, causing widespread damage to infrastructure, disrupting essential services, and affecting thousands of residents across the province.
The declaration enables the provincial government and local government units to mobilize emergency funds, expedite relief and rehabilitation efforts, and provide immediate assistance to affected communities while ensuring a faster and more coordinated disaster response.
The destructive earthquake, whose epicenter was located near the Municipality of Maasim, resulted in casualties, injuries, displacement of families, and significant damage to public and private structures. Roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, government facilities, and utility networks sustained varying degrees of destruction, while continuing aftershocks have heightened safety concerns among affected communities.
Governor Rogelio D. Pacquiao said the declaration of a state of calamity, following the recommendation of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, is a crucial step in ensuring that assistance reaches affected residents without delay. โSa ilalim ng State of Calamity, mas mapapalawak at mapapabilis natin ang pagpapatupad ng mga interbensyon sa mga apektadong lugar," he said.
Governor Pacquiao, along with Vice Governor Danny Martinez, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, heads of offices, and other officials promptly convened on June 10 to discuss and implement necessary and time-critical measures to address the impact of the calamity, particularly in towns heavily affected such as Glan and Malapatan, as well as the municipalities of Alabel, Malungon, Kiamba, Maasim, and Maitum.
While officials continuously monitor affected areas as aftershocks are still felt, Governor Pacquiao urged residents to remain vigilant, follow advisories from authorities, and cooperate with ongoing response efforts.
He also expressed gratitude to national government agencies, neighboring provinces and cities, humanitarian partners, private organizations, and volunteers that have extended assistance to Sarangani Province during this difficult time. (Jori Mae R. Samillano/Sarangani Provincial Information Office)
