BPATs: Municipality of Ampatuan’s First Line of Defense for Peace and Order

The Maguindanao Del Sur Police Provincial Office, in partnership with the LGU of Ampatuan, spearheaded a refresher training for 110 members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams (BPATs) on May 20, 2026, at the Municipal Gymnasium. With the theme “ALISTO Ampatuan, Aksyon AGAD: For Safety, Peace and Order,” the program sought to enhance the skills of community-based peacekeepers and reinforce collaboration among the police, local officials, and residents in sustaining peace and security.

Acting Provincial Director PCOL MICHAEL JOHN C MANGAHIS lauded the LGU’s strong support and emphasized the BPATs’ vital role as the “eyes and ears of the community.” He acknowledged their contributions to reducing drug-related incidents and focus crimes, while assuring the public of the PNP’s unwavering commitment to protect every citizen. Hon. Mayor Datu Rasul Sangki likewise expressed gratitude to the police for equipping volunteers with essential knowledge and skills, stressing that such initiatives are crucial in securing the municipality and ensuring the safety of all residents.

The BPATs’ role extends beyond surveillance and reporting; they actively engage in crime prevention and barangay-level security measures, while serving as mediators in community disputes. Their training in human rights, gender sensitivity, and basic defense tactics—including handcuffing techniques and Arnis fundamentals—ensures they can respond effectively and responsibly to local challenges. This dual function as protectors and peacebuilders makes them indispensable in maintaining order and harmony at the grassroots level.

Ultimately, the activity highlighted the spirit of community partnership, where BPATs bridge the gap between residents and formal security forces. By working hand-in-hand with the PNP and LGU, they foster trust, vigilance, and shared responsibility—key elements in building a peaceful, orderly, and progressive Ampatuan.

Strengthening Peace and Order Through Dialogue

The courtesy visit of Acting Provincial Director PCOL MICHAEL JOHN C MANGAHIS to Hon. Vice Mayor Moadz Alim of Datu Saudi Ampatuan marked a significant step in strengthening collaboration between law enforcement and local governance. The presence of Ustadz Wahid Tundok, a respected former commander of the 118th Base Command, added depth to the dialogue, symbolizing the value of engaging community influencers in peacebuilding efforts.

Discussions focused on the challenges within the SPMS Box (Shariff Aguak, Pagatin Mamasapano, Salibo, and Shariff Saydona Mustapha) where historical tensions and security threats demand coordinated responses. Ultimately, the meeting reflected a shared vision: peace and order cannot be achieved by force alone but through unity of purpose. By aligning law enforcement strategies with governance priorities, both sides committed to fostering a safer environment where residents can pursue progress free from fear and instability. This partnership stands as a testament to dialogue as the cornerstone of lasting peacebuilding.
