Twenty-three Marine Biology students from Samar State University (SSU)-Mercedes Campus successfully wrapped up their 144-hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) with a culmination program yesterday, July 7, 2026, at the Provincial Multi-Species Marine Fish Hatchery in San Roque, Macrohon.

The activity officially marks the end of the OJT stint of their Marine Biology Program for the 2nd Semester, Academic Year 2025-2026, signaling a strengthened partnership between the Provincial Agricultural Services Office (PAgSO) and SSU-Mercedes Campus.

The program was attended by SSU-Mercedes Campus Faculty Members/Program Coordinators led by Ms. Noeme D. Pajarillo, Supervising Agriculturist Fe Alin T. Dalangin, and Senior Agriculturist Ruel L. Natividad. As part of the event, the student trainees presented the highlights and actual hands-on experiences they gained throughout their time at the hatchery.

𝐏𝐫𝐞-𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 75,000 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒖𝒔 𝑭𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏

Another productive day at PMSMF Hatchery as our Samar State University Marine Biology student interns participated in the pre-dispersal activities of bangus fingerlings. Although hatchery production is not a primary component of their academic curriculum, this experience provided them with valuable exposure to aquaculture operations and fish seed production.

Together with the hatchery staff, the interns assisted in the harvesting, handling, and counting of approximately 75,000 bangus fingerlings in preparation for dispersal. Through this activity, they gained practical knowledge on hatchery management, proper fish handling techniques, and the importance of accuracy and teamwork in ensuring successful fish production.

Experiences like these allow students to expand their understanding of the fisheries sector and appreciate the vital role hatcheries play in supporting sustainable aquaculture.

The first batch of Marine Biology students from Samar State University (SSU)-Mercedes Campus celebrated the completion of their 144-hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) with a culmination program yesterday, June 17, 2026, at the Provincial Multi-Species Marine Fish Hatchery, San Roque, Macrohon.

Hatchery In-Charge and Fisheries Unit Head Mr. Ruel L. Natividad opened the event by praising the students for their dedication and hard work. Highlights of the trainees' activities during their internship were presented.

The program featured an inspirational message from OIC-Provincial Agriculturist Ms. Cristita A. Clava, who shared words of wisdom to the students. Closing remarks were delivered by Ms. Reina C. Lagumbay (Aquaculturist II) and Ms. Fe Alin T. Dalangin (Supervising Agriculturist), who congratulated the batch and urged them to use their newly acquired skills in their future careers.

The culmination officially closed the chapter for the first wave of trainees, while second batch of the students is to be welcomed today.

The Provincial Agricultural Services Office (PAgSO), through its Fisheries Section, welcomed 20 on-the-job training (OJT) students from the Marine Biology Program of Samar State University (SSU) - Mercedes Campus on May 28, 2026.

The group, led by Marine Biology Program Chairperson Ms. Irene Jean C. Lagumbay and Fisheries Program Chairperson Ms. Noeme D. Pajarillo, arrived and attended the orientation, which marked the official start of their OJT program.

They will complete their training at the Provincial Multi-Species Marine Fish Hatchery (PMSMFH) in San Roque, Macrohon, where they will engage in hands-on hatchery operations, management, and sustainable aquaculture to contribute to the development of the province's local aquatic resources.

The Provincial Multi-Species Marine Fish Hatchery successfully transferred a total of 34 female and 45 male hito breeders, which were carefully selected and transported to the Provincial Freshwater Hatchery in Panan-awan, Maasin for conditioning.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊|| 𝑭𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝑺𝑳𝑺𝑼-𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒄 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒖𝒔

Early this morning, the 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐇𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐲 under 𝐏𝐀𝐠𝐒𝐎-𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, successfully harvested a 𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒐𝒇 35, 000 𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒖𝒔 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔, marking another productive milestone in the province’s aquaculture efforts. Prior to stocking, hapa nets were carefully prepared by the 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐲𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 (𝐒𝐋𝐒𝐔) – 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐜 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 to ensure proper acclimatization and safe handling of the fingerlings upon arrival.

This activity highlights the ongoing initiatives of the 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐲𝐭𝐞 in strengthening local aquaculture development, ensuring the steady production of quality fish stocks, and supporting partner institutions through technical assistance and resource provision. Through the PMSMFH, the province continues to promote sustainable fisheries, enhance food security, and contribute to livelihood opportunities for communities by fostering collaboration with academic institutions and stakeholders.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊|| The 𝐏𝐀𝐆𝐒𝐎 – 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 led the production and preparation of the juveniles, which were subsequently picked up by the 𝐏𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐤 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 for stocking in the designated sea cages in the Municipality of Hinunangan.

A 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝟑,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐣𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐬 were released and stocked, consisting of 1,000 juveniles from the first batch and 𝟐,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐣𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡. The activity was carried out with careful handling during transport and release to ensure that the juveniles remained in good condition.

This continued initiative supports the sustained production of quality bangus and strengthens local aquaculture operations not only within the municipality but also across the province. It also reinforces the partnership between the provincial office and local fisherfolk associations in promoting livelihood opportunities in the fisheries sector.

The Provincial Multi-species Marine Fish Hatchery of PagSo-Fisheres Section successfully harvested 1,000 juvenile bangus from its pond-based nursery, marking another milestone in its continued commitment to sustainable aquaculture. The early morning transport ensured minimal stress to the fish, allowing them to remain in optimal condition throughout the journey. With careful handling and proper oxygenation, the juveniles were safely handed over and picked up by Pondol Fisherfolk Association of Hinunangan.

Upon arrival, the bangus were gently acclimatized and meticulously transferred into their sea cages, ensuring a smooth transition to their new environment. This initiative not only supports the continuous production of quality bangus but also strengthens the livelihood of local fisherfolk. Through collaborative efforts, the program highlights the importance of responsible resource management and reinforces the shared goal of enhancing fish production in the Province of Southern Leyte while promoting community development and food security.

The 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐇𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐲 under 𝐏𝐀𝐆𝐒𝐎 of the 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐲𝐭𝐞 successfully conducted the seeding of thousands of 𝑷𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒑𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒔 (blue swimming crab) zoea in San Roque, Municipality of Macrohon.

This activity highlights the team’s continued commitment to strengthening sustainable aquaculture and enhancing local fisheries production. Proper handling, acclimatization, and stocking of the zoea was observe during the dispersal to ensures better survival and growth during the early and most critical stage of development.

The initiative reflects the province’s dedication to resource sustainability, livelihood support for coastal communities, and the long-term development of the aquaculture industry in Southern Leyte
