Turning Resilience into Action: Analyzing the Lessons of Typhoon Tino and other flooding events of Cebu

Last November, we were reminded of the raw power of nature when Typhoon Tino forced us to postpone our gathering. Originally set for November 5-7, 2025, the 13th ACES rises again this June 3-5, 2026 at the SAFAD Theatre of the University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus. Today, we stand stronger and more determined to find solutions.

We are proud to present one of the most critical sessions of the 13th ACES 2026: a deep-dive panel discussion on a topic that hits close to home for every Cebuano.

📍 The Triple-Island Experience
We’ve curated a full-day immersive tour to explore the ecological importance of Cebu’s marine and coastal gems.

1. Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS)
The Science: A 1,382-hectare protected area and a critical stopover for thousands of migratory shorebirds along the East Asian Australasian Flyway.

The Experience: Bird watching (spot up to 60 migratory species), plus expert-led lectures on sanctuary management.

2. Gilutungan Marine Sanctuary
The Science: A gold standard for community-managed marine protected areas.

The Experience: Snorkeling in crystal-clear waters to witness firsthand the recovery of coral reef habitats and thriving fish populations.

3. Caohagan Island
The Science: Learn about seaweed farming (two Genera of guso) and its global demand for carrageenan.

We are pleased to share the final, completed version of the program for the 13th Annual International Conference on Environmental Science (ACES).

As we finalize our preparations for an incredible two days together, please take note of the following important updates and reminders:

🚶 Getting to the Venue
Once you arrive at the USC TC portal, please note that the walk to the venue is a bit uphill, though it offers a very scenic view of the campus. If you prefer not to walk, a campus shuttle is readily available at the portal to take you directly to the venue for a minimal fee of 10 pesos.

🔑 Unique Registration Codes
To ensure a smooth and quick check-in process at the venue, we will be sending out unique codes to our paid registrants by tomorrow at the latest. Please keep an eye on your inbox for this code, as you will need it to easily complete your on-site registration.

🍽️ Meals and Catering
Your registration fee covers the following for both days of the conference:

Conference ID and kit

Daily morning and afternoon snacks

Daily buffet lunch

Free-flowing coffee to keep you energized throughout the event

Admission to the Fellowship Dinner on the evening of June 3

🌴 Field Immersion Add-on
For those who have registered and paid for the post-conference Field Immersion:

Your fee covers all transportation from the designated assembly point to the different islands and back.

All meals during the immersion are included.

Getting ready for the 13th Annual International Conference on Environmental Science? Here is a quick run-down of our presentation guidelines!

🎤 For Oral Presenters:

Format your slides to a 16:9 widescreen size. You will have 12 minutes to present, plus 3 minutes for an audience Q&A.

Heads up: Organizers will provide laptops in the breakout rooms, so personal laptops are not allowed. We will be sending out the program (schedule of presentations) along with the means of submitting the presentations by next week.

📌 For Poster Presenters:

Print your posters in portrait orientation measuring 120 cm in height by 85 cm in width. Please print on poster paper and avoid tarpaulin to help us reduce plastic waste!

Setup is at the SAFAD Hall. You must mount your own poster using 3M Scotch heavy-duty mounting tape.

Make sure to review the full document for extra details on file naming conventions, required poster sections, and font sizes. We can't wait to see your research! 👋
