United in driving sustainable progress for Laguna's communities! 🤝🌿

DOST-FPRDI and PENRO-Laguna discussed ways to strengthen inter-agency collaboration for sustainable provincial development.

Led by DOST-FPRDI Director Rico J. Cabangon and PENRO-Laguna Head Venerando Garcia, the meeting revolved around deploying DOST-FPRDI’s green technologies and technical services to empower communities in Laguna.

During the August 27 meeting, the PENRO-Laguna team visited two facilities:

📍 DOST-FPRDI Xylarium – houses an extensive collection of wood specimens for scientific research and identification.

📍 Forest Products Innovation Center (FPIC) – a showcase of ready-to-adopt technologies for local government units and wood-based industries.

The DOST- Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) teamed up for the launching and Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing Ceremony of the Foreign Assisted and Special Project (FASP): “Green Livelihoods: Bamboo-based Charcoal Processing for Briquette Production in Rodriguez, Rizal.”

This partnership marks a significant step in delivering innovative Charcoal Briquetting Technology to three beneficiary People’s Organizations:

🔹 Puray Upland Farmers Association
🔹 Remontado Balik Kalikasan Inc.
🔹 Tribal Council Association of Puray Inc.

The initiative aims to advance eco-friendly livelihoods and sustainable forest management for upland communities in Rizal.

“The goal goes beyond identifying wood. It is about giving the Philippines better science to protect its forests, uphold legal and sustainable trade, and safeguard the resources that future generations will inherit." said DOST-FPRDI Director Rico J. Cabangon.

The DNA-based approach complements traditional wood identification methods by providing scientific evidence when a timber's physical characteristics are difficult to identify.
