πππ! π A small kitchen fire can turn into a life-threatening emergency in seconds. One of the most dangerous mistakes you can make is pouring water onto burning cooking oil or grease. Remember, WATER + GREASE FIRE = DANGER! π¦βπ₯
When water comes into contact with extremely hot oil, it can rapidly turn into steam and cause burning oil to splatter violently, spreading flames throughout your kitchen and potentially causing severe burns and extensive property damage.
π WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF A GREASE FIRE STARTS?

1. TURN OFF THE HEAT β IF SAFE TO DO SO.
If you can safely reach the stove controls without approaching the flames, turn off the heat source. Never put yourself at risk to do this.
β
2. COVER THE PAN WITH A METAL LID OR BAKING SHEET.
If the fire is small and it is safe to approach, carefully slide a metal lid or baking sheet over the pan to smother the flames by cutting off the oxygen supply. Do not move the pan, and leave the cover in place until everything has completely cooled.

3. NEVER POUR WATER ON BURNING OIL.
Do not use water, wet towels, or flour to extinguish a grease fire. These can make the situation more dangerous.

4. USE THE CORRECT FIRE EXTINGUISHER β ONLY IF SAFE.
Use a suitable extinguisher specifically rated for cooking-oil fires, such as a Class K extinguisher where applicable. An ABC extinguisher may not be suitable for every cooking-oil fire, so always follow the extinguisher's label and local fire-safety guidance. If you are not trained or the fire is spreading, evacuate immediately.

5. KNOW WHEN TO EVACUATE.
If the fire cannot be controlled immediately, flames are spreading, or smoke is building up, leave the area, alert everyone in the household, close the door behind you if safe, and call the fire department from a safe location. Never risk your life trying to save property.

π¨βπ³ Keep towels, paper, curtains, and other combustible materials away from the stove.
π¨βπ³ Keep children away from hot cooking surfaces.
π¨βπ³ Avoid overheating cooking oil.
π¨βπ³ Keep a suitable, accessible fire extinguisher and know how to use it safely.
π¨βπ³ Make sure everyone in your household knows the emergency exit routes.
